Yeah, that’s one of those things where I understand how and why it happens, I know it’s a process with a long history and is probably inevitable … and I still think it’s a shame to lose some of the unusual fossilized forms in English.
However, my opinion changes radically as soon as I get back into “teaching ESOL” mode. Then I want to regularize the fuck out of everything and finally fix English spelling/pronunciation rules.

I’m curious why that one bothers you in particular.
Do you feel that people should just use “to give” instead? Or “to make a gift of”?
