I don't really care that he agreed to do a gig at the comedy festival in Riyadh. Was it a great idea? No. But I cannot imagine caring this much about what comedians do when *gestures broadly at American politics*

(I'm not white, but I am American.)

You must not be a part of cancel culture then.
It sucks that Jimmy went to Riyadh, but I figure he needed the money. Everyone needs money badly these days.

I suppose all of those cosmetic treatments are expensive. Or maybe he has some interesting secret hobby or addiction. Otherwise, he seems like he's doing exceptionally well for himself.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't know he had cosmetic treatments.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)

He’s been pretty open about that. Lots of things, from hair implants to teeth whitening to facial cosmetic surgery. It was rather obvious when he showed up back on TV with more hair and an altered face, but even before that he’d always steered into jokes about dying his hair or whitening his teeth.

Why, does he need another mansion or something?

AYRT
Ask him yourself.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Can't, he's too rich to interact with normies like me.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, fuck him. There are other comedians. I have lost nothing by switching him out of my rotation.

Im not making a big fuss, im not sending hate mail, i just negatively interacted with anything having to do with him(/the others I know about (WHY BILL BUR =[ )) until he stops show up in my feeds.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Bill Burr made me sad :(

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, idgaf. People online get so rabidly riled about about the weirdest things. Like we have people suffering in "detention centers" that were grabbed off the street for no legal reason but yeah, lets get upset about comedians going to a festival instead.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people get "riled up" about things like this the same way they get invested in celebrities saying something offensive or very conspicuous consumption/pollution or politicians being casually corrupt... or any number of other things that aren't the widespread horrors of acute human suffering.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Because its easy and makes them feel like they're standing up for something when really they are doing nothing.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess. Personally, I do spend a lot more time talking about less consequential things. I try to give my money and my volunteer labour (and my votes, of course) to things that really matter, but I think it's okay to amuse yourself by getting a little heated about sillier things in your free time. It can feel good to get a little intense about a TV show or a sports team or a celebrity's actions, knowing that the stakes aren't really that significant.

Or maybe people have values they live by and get upset when they find out someone whose works they've enjoyed for years (yes, even comedians) appears to go against those values.

Of course they could just drop that person's works quietly and move on, or even continue on as nothing happened, but having a reaction to it doesn't mean they're just virtue signaling.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's the same reason people have lost respect for entertainers who have performed for the trump regime. If human rights are so important to you, then why would you give a pass for these comedians? It's not like the riyadh festival was an independently run festival that just happened to be in riyadh. This was a government sponsored event.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really up to speed on what the controversy is, but then, I've only known of comedians performing in the Middle East for the troops, and at least one who did a mini-tour because of a special request by a prince. And all of those seemed pretty benign at the time. I suppose it would depend on who was running the festival, and why and when, before I could give a solid opinion.

But if it were one of those shady situations where just associating oneself with an event is basically endorsing whatever-bad-thing, I would probably judge. I've done the same with anyone aligning themselves with evil or just enabling it, and I don't care where they're from or what else is going on in the world. Because I don't look at things as either/or, and just because I might spend more energy on one thing doesn't mean I don't get to have an opinion on the other thing.

I’ll ask the obvious question: what does being unhappy that Jimmy Carr is being rewarded for being a piece of shit have to do with American politicians? Do you think he should get a free pass from the British public because American politicians aren’t held to account for their crimes? This secret just doesn’t make sense.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird and I'm surprised the poster is American, because it sounds like the people on social media who bring up Trump and American politics whenever something else is being asked about.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I am assuming the OP is American and talking from an American experience listening to other Americans voice their opinions on this British comedian.

Seems like a pretty simple angle to jump to I'm kind of laughing a bit at your anger and frustration here. But just a bit. Sometimes I get annoyed at secrets that seem to make no sense to me too.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don’t care. This is just performative nonsense at the expanse of the people in the Middle East. They aren’t allowed to have fun things because their rulers are bad.

America’s rulers (and frankly of my own country) also also bad. We still get Jimmy Carr should we want him.

50 percent of those complaining are just shouting on line they have zero authority or control in their personal lives.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people genuinely believe that it is somehow on a different scale when the bad is from Muslims/Muslim culture. And somehow don't recognize that as a problematic, discriminatory view. They'd view the exact same action as different if it was done by a Muslim/Arabic country vs. a western country (or Israel probably).

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, the very reason they're being asked to perform is to shore up the credibility and glamour of the Saudis/Dubai/whoever. I don't see anything wrong with poking a hole in that. I don't care about this comedian, but I am perfectly capable of paying attention to more than one thing at a time.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-31 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's cool for you Secret OP. I think you are within your right to like anyone you do. With that said, my critique of Jimmy Carr is that he's a public figure so the public will see what he does and people will have opinions of him.
We as a society use public figures as a visible example of what we want/expect in terms of holding people accountable. It just is a part of public discourse/living in a society.

I would expect a western comedian who uses criticism of politics or public figures as a part of their material to have some form of a moral compass to not take money from and promote a government that punishes/cover up their own citizens for criticizing the government/ruling class.

There comes a point where we should hold people accountable, even if it's just public perception and not so much lawful actions.
Like, yeah, so the comedian will continue to book gigs and go on with their career, but at the same time, I should be allowed to point at Jimmy and scream "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at him.

If Secret OP doesnt want to condemn Jimmy Carr, I hold no ill will toward OP, but nothing OP or Jimmy or his fellow comedians will stop me from looking down on them.
