I dunno, I think a lot of the callsigns in the original Top Gun are pretty spot on.
Viper is beady eyed guy with a sharp tongue.
Jester has no fucking sense of humor.
Goose is always honking on about something in the back.
Iceman completely melts every time he smiles.
Maverick is this goofball in over his head all the time, who seems to think he is a cool cowboy, just like the guy in the TV Show.

They all kinda fit.

A lot of people still don't understand how callsigns work, you don't get a "cool" one unless you did something real stupid to earn it. It is usually ironic or insulting. For Maverick to be called Maverick, he did something real dumb and got real lucky.

I'm no expert, but everything I've heard (from actual pilots) about how you get your call sign... it probably wasn't anything that benign. It's usually something that recalls something monumentally stupid or gross that you did, an insult about your appearance, or something like that.

Or your name. There's a "Beef" whose last name was Wellington, "Master" Bates, etc.

One I heard was "Steamer", because his last name was Cleveland.

I agree. I'm not in the fandom, but do people think they're weird or something?

They claim they are "too cool", but "cool" isn't cool in the military, you get a "cool" callsign because of something dumb. It is ironic, if not outright insulting. But each of the callsigns do lend themselves to an ironic or stupid interpretation. So the complainers are half right, the callsigns are too cool if they are meant to be cool, but just this side of a roast if you look at them ironically (which is how it actually is done in the military).

Except Goose, that is a pretty middle of the road callsign. But he's a pretty middle of the road guy.

What? Really, I don't think I've encountered many fandoms where they think their characters nicknames are too cool for them.
Goose is my fav though, so maybe I might be a little too middle of the road myself to know any better.

nayrt - It's not just that they're too cool, it's people who know how call signs work know that real nicknames would be a lot less dignified sounding and probably would have a rude origin.

If anything they're a little chill, which is fine it's a movie.

All the real callsigns I've ever heard have been a little insulting. These track.

That movie was very inaccurate about a lot of stuff....
