Re: Weekend Plans?

I got quilt designing software so I’ll be playing with that all weekend. I’m still facing months of recovery for my ankle and discovered that I can’t sit at my sewing machine to do real quilting. So I’ll just do it virtually for now and maybe in a couple weeks we can move my sewing machine to the dining room so I can arrange myself comfortably and use the knee pedal to sew quilt blocks. I’m learning that I enjoy piecing blocks more than joining completed blocks and am only kinda half kidding when I say I wonder if I could get my husband to sew the blocks together…

I hope you are able to create some good patterns! Do you use accuquilt or something similar?

I have an Accuquilt cutter because I was hopeless when trying to cut things to the same size. I have since learned all the tricks for traditional cutting and could have saved myself the money but honestly I love how fast and easy it is to just run the fabric through a machine and end up with all the pieces I need. Sewing them together is definitely my favorite part of quilting!

I got Electric Quilt 8 for designing blocks and quilts. They have a few quilt patterns in the software and like 250ish blocks I think. They also sell collections of additional block designs (and quilts too I think) but I haven’t looked at getting any extras.

My Accuquilt came in a bundle with one of their Qube sets that has all the basic shapes most commonly used. They give you a block pattern book with it that has 72 blocks you can make just with what’s in that set. They have expansion sets too but I don’t have them. I do have several other dies though and I made a document with all the shapes and what measurements I have across all the Accuquilt products. When playing with the software on my computer, I have the document open on my iPad so it’s super easy to see what I have and what size I can make.

Tomorrow I want to experiment with recreating the Nine Patch quilt that Beth Dutton had in Yellowstone. It’s a popular project in quilting circles and no one can agree what size the blocks are on the quilt in the show. I figure it will be fun drafting it at various sizes and seeing if I can figure out the size of the original.
