The fungal nail kits do actually work but you have to do them consistently until the fungus is completely gone, which may be six months. The ones with 5% Amorolfine are the best, but any of the kits will eventually work.

The home remedy most recommended is white vinegar, which will work for superficial cases and stop it spreading further, but if it's in the nail bed (which yours almost certainly is if the toenail came off) it won't cure it or penetrate to the nail bed.

This. Consistency is absolutely crucial, you can't be lax about it. They do and will work as long as you follow the directions and stick to it.
