Toe fungus (warning for grossness)

(Anonymous) 2026-04-04 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've been battling toe fungus for the past 2 or so years. Tonight half my toenail came off. :|

I don't have health insurance so just hoping it heals and wondering if anyone has tried home remedies with any success.

My dad has something like that, but never has half his nail fallen off, so I'm not sure his solution will work for you. But he uses a nail-repair polish, buffs them and reapplies every week after using a strong remover. (it doesn't actually get rid of the problem but his nails have been in a lot better shape since he started doing that) Have you tried the fungal kits/remedies they offer? Trying to look for the nail repair/strengthening serum he uses, I ended up coming across a bunch of those instead. So they might be worth a try?
His always gets worse between seasons, so hopefully yours evens out some in the coming months.

I think your best bet is to go into a pharmacy and ask. My dad has had his for years because he's stubborn like that, so I don't believe it'll get better on its own. I don't think a regular pharmacy charges if you ask for the pharmacist and tell them your problem, but you might want to look it up to be sure.

The fungal nail kits do actually work but you have to do them consistently until the fungus is completely gone, which may be six months. The ones with 5% Amorolfine are the best, but any of the kits will eventually work.

The home remedy most recommended is white vinegar, which will work for superficial cases and stop it spreading further, but if it's in the nail bed (which yours almost certainly is if the toenail came off) it won't cure it or penetrate to the nail bed.

This. Consistency is absolutely crucial, you can't be lax about it. They do and will work as long as you follow the directions and stick to it.

When my partner got a fungal infection, we used the classic Listerine to soak the feet for a week and that took care of it. However, it wasn’t in the nail bed as yours is so it seems that the kits are your best bet.
Also, wash your sneakers with baking soda as the detergent and vinegar as the rinse. Wash them once a month until the infection clears up. Wipe down dress shoes inside with Clorox wipes. Wash your socks separately from your other clothes and use vinegar as a rinse.

Thank you all for the advice. I appreciate it. <3

I've read that people use tea tree oil, Vicks vaporub... not sure how effective those are.

Try to keep your feet dry as much as possible. Wash well and then dry thoroughly when you're done bathing. Also, if it's possible, I've read that having more than one pair of shoes and rotating between them daily can be helpful. That way, you're giving your shoes over 24 hours to completely dry out inside.

Rotating between two pairs is also supposed to help them last longer. I probably can't explain it well, but like. If a specific pair of shoes would last you exactly one year with daily wear, rotating between two identical pairs would last you OVER two years.
