I don't really know why people expect romantic movies to be any more realistic than any other genre. If someone goes downstairs in a dark basement with a flickering flashlight because they heard something, and a slasher jumps out at them and tries to kill them, would you yell liar at the screen because every time you go, it's the cat or the furnace flaking out or a pipe burst? I am actually comforted sometimes thinking about how very unlikely it is for some of those horrifyingly embarrassing rom-com situations to happen.

Action movies are also so far removed from reality it can get comical at times and yet for the most part people will just readily accept it as part of the genre. Which they should imo.

But romance media gets this bizarre criticism of ‘not being realistic’ as if they were trying to be in the first place. Like what part of a pair falling in love over a few days is meant to be realistic?? Come on now.

Just another case of women-targeted media being ridiculed for the same things that men-targeted media is celebrated for.
