It part self deprecation, and part (often subconsciously) fishing for compliments. And, yeah, I'm annoyed by this too (also with macros and art--any fan work, really). When I see someone saying, "This sucks" about their work, it's all I can do not to post and agree with them just out of spite (even if I actually like the work). STOP DOING THIS, PEOPLE!

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
AGREED. Very much agreed.

And yet, if anyone ever outright expresses satisfaction in their work, that gets chalked up to arrogance.

Come on, fandom, allow people to have opinions without making something conniving out of it.

[identity profile] stupendous.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
AMEN. I don't even read fic and this still pisses me off, though I do look at fanart and some fanartists do this too, which pisses me off just as much, particularly when their work is actually good. Self-respect isn't easy to gain but you can START gaining it by just NOT writing or vocalizing your dislike for yourself. The less you go on about it the more you'll push it out of your mind.

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree. While I don't think pointing out some flaws (for instance, "can't write battle scenes to save my life" or "my noses on this drawing suck") are bad, but wiping off the whole thing as a work of suck? Then why post it? If you are looking for criticism, then state so! I posted a work that I wasn't happy with (art wise) for some criticism and tips (and got some excellent ones).

But unless you don't explicitly ask for advice/tips and just say "the whole thing sucks", why in the world would you post it? Fridge Logic...

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I posted a secret recently along similar lines. Nothing annoys me more than self-deprecators and/or compliment-fishers, so I know how you feel anon.

[identity profile] aldehyde.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. i understand a certain amount of self-deprecating humour, but certain writers tend to go overboard. why would i want to read something even the CREATOR things is a pile of shit?

[identity profile] marisahsaaaa.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't usually think my stuff is any good, but I definitely agree with this. Saying that your fanfic sucks does not make me want to read it.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed totally, anon. Especially with fic. I can forgive a little with art if it's "I realize X is wrong with this picture" because some stuff can be hard to fix and be a decent work overall anyway.

[identity profile] kestrellan.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I completely do not agree. I'm not a fanfic writer/fan artist/anything else in fandom, so I'm not defending myself in that, though I suppose I'm defending a habit of mine. I don't think you really understand the person's intentions when they write that. True, sometimes people may just be fishing for compliments. But please understand that a lot of people genuinely have very low self-esteem and find it extremely difficult to take pride in the things they produce. Even if they don't like it, I think they'll hope that someone else at least will (therefore, the reason for posting it). And even if a part of them does like it, or if they like a part of it, then if you have that negative mindset, saying such things as 'this is kinda crappy' in the summary is a defence mechanism. They HOPE someone else will like it and make them feel better about it, but I think the main worry is that others will agree that their work is crap, and if that's the case, they can then point out that they said it first. Y'know, it gives them some cushioning from the blow. Try not to be too judgemental about it.

UGH YES.

Normally I just roll my eyes at the "the way you present your fic doesn't conform to my personal preferences therefore you are evil" secrets, but this? God, I *hate* it, on so many levels. In fact, any opinion of the fic, positive or negative, from the author in their heading is a huge turn-off for me. Just let your work speak for itself. AND STOP EQUIVOCATING. Have a little artistic integrity, ffs.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, actually. That's annoying.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, it drives me nuts when people say that instead of TRYING to write a good summary. Practice makes perfect!

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It keeps me away as well. I just take their insecurity at face value and don't even bother.
If you believe your work is that bad, and didn't try your best on it, why share it?

I do not read fics that have "i suck with summaries." Ever.

Because usually they suck with more than just summaries. >>;

[identity profile] uri-sensei.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can't agree more. If it sucks, then go back and make it better!

My least favorite? "Full summary inside." You only need one or two sentances to summarize the main point of your fic, no matter how long it is, not a full blow-by-blow. I don't read those because I figure that they just want more clicks to their fic.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (Default)

[personal profile] amaresu 2009-12-08 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I take people on their word when it comes to headers. If you tell me it sucks then I'll trust you on that and not read it. I understand being insecure about your abilities, but in that case just put a standard header on the fic and let it speak for itself.

[identity profile] cat63.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. If it's so awful, why are they posting it? Meh.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2009-12-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of that on fanfiction.net, I've noticed. For curiosity's sake sometimes I click on stories with those kinds of sentences in the summaries and the fics do seem okay if not amazing--then I'm annoyed with the author for (as others have said) practically fishing for compliments.

If it's someone's first time writing a story and they know they're not the best at it, they should be asking for honest opinions and advice on how to possibly improve.

[identity profile] justapieceofme.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so guilty of this. My ANs tend to be lists of things I don't like about the fic, and everytime I do it I wonder "why the hell would anyone read this after I just ripped it to shreds?" but I can't seem to stop justifying myself this way. :/

At least I've never done the "I suck at summaries" thing.
