Operative word being moments. Wincest or not, the first three seasons in their entirety are a monument to the bond of the Winchester family.

Seasons four and five are way too busy with their shiny apocalypse and brandnew!angel storylines to stop for little things like decent characterization.

Ah, the battle cry of those lacking a better argument. Newsflash: people are free to watch the show and express whatever opinion they have of it whether you like it or not.

Say what you want about said opinion, but don't try to shut people up, it just makes you look like the overzealous fan.

i don't have a problem with opinions, i have a problem with the fans continuously complaining about the show going downhill, being so boring, needing to be like the first season, etc, etc. i just don't understand. if the show is making you so miserable, just watch the seasons you like and be done with it.

I always think of "Though for 'fans', they sure do complain a lot."

Dude, of course you're free to express your complaints, but just bitching about it isn't going to win over people who disagree with you and just brings down the people who are having a good time — so of course then they don't want to be around your negative opinions and react to it.

Also I can't keep track of what anon is saying what, but I fail to see how S4 and S5 isn't still primarily about love, duty, and family. Or what characterization issues you're feeling bitter about.

You know it reminds me of a Doctor Who joke.

How can you tell if someone is a fan of Doctor Who? They hate Doctor Who.

Because no two Doctor Who fans are going to agree on which parts are sheer genius and which parts suck and should never have been made. *cough*Pyramids of Mars*cough* Let alone agree on canon. So it often sounds as if we hate the show.

Anyways, that's all I've got to say.

Perhaps there was cracky goodness to be found, but it was so boring I couldn't stay awake to see it. Really, I have no idea what happens in the third part because I slept through it.

Wow, I disagree with you about the characterization, but to each their own. I found S4 and the erosion of Sam and Dean's bond to be pretty fucking depressing, but it was still compelling television. ymmv.

Thing is, I was someone actually looking forward to them being split up in S4. Big angst whore and all that. I just think it was handled shittily. It was oversimplified, lazy, about everyone else as much as it was about them and their own issues, and seriously lacked the heart of their relationship, in my eyes.

They've fought or disagreed before, but the caring, soul, whatever you want to call it, was always there. S4 had some scattered moments of decency on that front, but overall, they felt like roommates to me.

Sob, this. D: IMO they use Dean's time in Hell as an excuse to rewrite the characters juuuust enough so that they didn't have to deal with all the issues they had built up. I HATE YOU SEASON 4. I WAS SO EXCITED AT THE START OF YOU, AND LOVED CASTIEL THEN. BOOOOOOOOOO.

I like how "wincesty moments" gets inflated to "decent characterization" there.

The characterization of Sam and Dean as individuals, and the handling of their relationship is key to Wincest, no? If any of that suffers, Wincest suffers.

Except that Wincest is not itself the definition of good characterization. I'd love more development for Sam and Dean as individuals and a better read into their relationship because I'm frankly disappointed with S5 in that regard, but I thought S4 was actually rather good. Not perfect, but we got a lot of significant development for Sam and Dean both.

Never said it was. Only that a general lack of good and consistent characterization, imo, hurt both the show and Wincest as a pairing in S4. And S5 for that matter.

I think Sam was OOC for much of S4. OOC and erratically characterized. And Dean took up that mantle in early S5. I use a comparison between gradual evolution and the rapid-fire kind that happens in comic books from radiation spills (lol, I know).

One involves a lot of groundwork being layed to show you how something goes from point A to point B. If that had happened, I could've found S4 better, but as it was, it was like S3 ended and all of a sudden people were getting unrecognizable. Not developed, just largely and randomly different than they had been for three years.

Um, there were characterization issues in season 3 as well, especially with Dean in the beginning, and for instance the way they became OOC-ly stupid around Bela...

Just saying, season 4 is not where issues began...
