Operative word being moments. Wincest or not, the first three seasons in their entirety are a monument to the bond of the Winchester family.

Seasons four and five are way too busy with their shiny apocalypse and brandnew!angel storylines to stop for little things like decent characterization.

You know it reminds me of a Doctor Who joke.

How can you tell if someone is a fan of Doctor Who? They hate Doctor Who.

Because no two Doctor Who fans are going to agree on which parts are sheer genius and which parts suck and should never have been made. *cough*Pyramids of Mars*cough* Let alone agree on canon. So it often sounds as if we hate the show.

Wow, I disagree with you about the characterization, but to each their own. I found S4 and the erosion of Sam and Dean's bond to be pretty fucking depressing, but it was still compelling television. ymmv.

Thing is, I was someone actually looking forward to them being split up in S4. Big angst whore and all that. I just think it was handled shittily. It was oversimplified, lazy, about everyone else as much as it was about them and their own issues, and seriously lacked the heart of their relationship, in my eyes.

They've fought or disagreed before, but the caring, soul, whatever you want to call it, was always there. S4 had some scattered moments of decency on that front, but overall, they felt like roommates to me.

Sob, this. D: IMO they use Dean's time in Hell as an excuse to rewrite the characters juuuust enough so that they didn't have to deal with all the issues they had built up. I HATE YOU SEASON 4. I WAS SO EXCITED AT THE START OF YOU, AND LOVED CASTIEL THEN. BOOOOOOOOOO.

I like how "wincesty moments" gets inflated to "decent characterization" there.

The characterization of Sam and Dean as individuals, and the handling of their relationship is key to Wincest, no? If any of that suffers, Wincest suffers.

Agree, but what is consistency and good writing compared to angels, angels and oh wait more angels. LOL Seriously there is barely any plot left from all the plot holes and retconning, but hey what about them angels;)

Yeah I hear ya. Reading interviews about how that bloody thing turned the show upside down, makes it even harder to watch the caricature we're stuck with now.

Tell me about it. I've been wanting to rewatch the first seasons for a while, but knowing how things went south and how much potential was wasted is just terribly disenheartening.

Amongst many other problems with the writers' actions, I can't stop being struck by the sheer laziness of introducing the angels in the first place.

Hey, instead of going through with this morally complex and bleak season where Sam is losing himself as a result of saving Dean with his abilities, and Dean is severely fucked up and damaged from Hell (you know, like we've been setting up), let's do that other idea that we said we weren't ever going to do and write everything else to fit in to it!

Damn just your short premise of what could/should/would have been if not for the strike sounds 10 times better and more original than what we actually got. Just make me more depressed why don't you;)

I honestly think the writers don't give a flying fuck about the show anymore. They don't seem to bother to look even three episodes behind them before they either make a retcon or another contradiction. The show have been sinking/stinking since season 4, still love the brothers though and that is why I just can't go away.

LOL, sorry. I've just been lamenting these same points for a long-ass time now. To me, it was just so obvious where things were progressing from S3, even with the Strike making it a little screwy. Prepare for a tl;dr.

Sam was growing darker, more vicious and willing to kill, working with Ruby, to prepare himself to fight the war (whatever happened to 'all' the demons let out of the Gate, btw?), and to save Dean. For the first time (and as laid in in AHBL II, when the writers still understood consistency), Sam needed to protect Dean, instead of the other way around.

Dean, on the other hand, was more vulnerable than he had ever been, faced with his own mortality and an eternity of torment. Reflecting on his life, his regrets, his fears, all sorts of things drudged up: issues with John, his desire for a life outside of hunting.

Plus, John sacrificed himself for Dean, Dean did for Sam, the next logical step was Sam going off the deep end for Dean. It tied into everything. The mytharc, the theme of the show, Sam's development as a character. When it didn't happen, it was the beginning of the end of the way things used to be (although I didn't realize that until much later).

Anyway, I agree, the writers really seem like they could care less at this point. Which is sad, b/c I can get over things not going exactly the way I want if they're just well-written and sound, which NONE of this has been. How do you ret-con shit you set up in the same season? I mean, really, that takes some serious apathy and/or arrogance.

Like you, I love who these characters used to be, I want to see the conclusion to their story, and fandom still passes the time. That's about all I get out of things now.
