Yeah, that covers it pretty well! OP, I personally believe that Castiel adds more to the brother dynamic, but again, that is my opinion, you'll just have to see for yourself.

Some people love it, and think it adds to character growth, some think it stumps it. Remember, it's all perspective!

I'm glad we have another saltgunner in our midst, and I sincerely hope that the "Christian" (if you can even call it that) mythology doesn't scare you away!

Yeah, no worries about it too much. It's not strictly Christian based material, just Christianism is the most popular religeon when it comes to Angels, Demons and the apocolypse. Most Religeons have something Angel like in them, and Quite a few of some sort of end of days thing. :3

Yay! Same thing happened to me, and it's the best fandom decision I've ever made, if belated. But don't worry, it's not extremely heavy-handed, and they tell you most of what you need to know. I might recommend Paradise Lost, but I'd recommend it anyway just because it's awesome.

Disclaimer: I love SPN. Castiel is what got me watching the show again. Some parts make me scream in frustration, but overall I loves it.

Now, actual reply: Honestly, OP? The less you know the better you'll be. As a fan of mythology/religious beliefs of all shapes and sizes, if you know too much about the myths they're drawing from in SPN, I've found it only becomes a disappointment overall. ("CHANGELINGS?! AWESOME! ... Wait, demons? They're fucking demons?" "So Anna's Lucifer, right?! :D ... what do you mean, no?")
