Venting Corner

I have a very small, petty one today. I hate scented trash bags. Some of the faintly-scented ones are tolerable to me, but most of them have this overwhelming synthetic chemical odor that is just really gross, and potentially enough to cause a headache. And I also feel like they don't do jack shit to prevent the trash from stinking. If anything, they make it worse, by causing the trash to smell like dirty trash AND sickly sweet chemicals.

Yeah, I hate that basically most trash bags that aren't the 30 gallon size have noticeable scents. And they're usually the kind I associate with bug spray, ick.

YEAH!

Honestly it doesn't seem petty to me, but there's nothing 'potential' about the headache and sometimes retching that I get from them.

Agreed! I'm so mad that I can't find very very small unscented trash bags, anymore - all bathroom/mini sized bags, even in the cheap brands, are scented. I use them for cat litter because plastic shopping bags aren't strong enough, but nobody needs chemical vanilla scent stinking up the cabinet where the litter supplies live between scoops.

I get small (like 8 gallon or less) trash bags from Dollar General (the box is white, I think it's the store brand?) and they have no scent. Because yes - scented trash bags are gross.

COSIGNED - someone who has a very strong sense of smell

Hear hear! Actually, I don't want scent in any of my household products. Unless I'm using them off-label for pest control in problem areas. Bugs hate the smell of dryer sheets.

One of my co-workers is super sweet and very nice, but she’s a noisy eater and my misophonia having ass can’t stand it when she eats lunch near me. It’s excruciating hearing the lip smacking and chewing noises. [shudders]

I used to work with this guy who made totally disgusting slurpy slimy sounds when he ate. I swear he should have gotten a job doing sound effects for zombie movies and I usually had to take my lunch break the same time he did.

I've known some people like that and I truly don't understand how you can be so completely unaware of just how loud you're being when no one else around you is eating that loudly.

I have a new sweatshirt that I really love the colour and fabric of but it stinks so badly. I thought it would go away after the first wash as is normally the case with new clothes but I washed it three times already and it still stinks. I'll try washing with vinegar and letting it air out outside for a few days but ugh, I don't think it'll get better.

try a vodka spray - I get one of those $2 mini bottles of plain vodka (you don't want dye/flavor, just get the cheap Fleischmann's clear) and pour it into a spray bottle, add equal amount water. You want a 1:1 solution of vodka and water. Spritz onto the fabric until it's just damp and then air dry.

OLD theatre trick. I use it on fabrics I can't wash, like silks - when you upcycle old kimonos, you end up with a lot of nasty basement smell on delicate silk fabric, vodka does the trick.

I’ve had some luck with very musty/mildewy fabric when I soak it in dissolved oxygen bleach (like oxyclean) and/or borax. I dissolve the powder in warm water and then soak for at least overnight, but sometimes up to 48 hours when I’ve forgotten about it. Then I put it through the laundry or at least rinse thoroughly. Air drying outdoors probably helped a little too.

It did a great job on some clothes and loose fabric pieces that were in a smelly closet for a few years.

Seconding the vodka trick.

I've also salvaged many washable textiles using this method:

- fill a bucket or cooler with HOT water

- dissolve a powder detergent in it (you want to use something with enzymes like amylase)

- fully submerge the textile and cover it with something solid to keep the heat in (this is why a small cooler is ideal, you just close the lid)

- soak 6+ hours

- dump the whole thing, textile and soak water, into the washer and launder as usual

I have a kitchen being fitted, and he is doing it wrong in the most petty, pathetic ways possible. Example: We have a coffee machine that needs a certain level of clearance around it to keep it clean and refill it. He built a space, fucked up the measurement because he forgot to add in the depth of the worksurface underneath, put in a way too big cabinet above, and made the gap for the machine too small. The coffee machine fits, but can't be refilled or cleaned without pulling it out. I tell him to switch the cabinet for the smaller kind or remove it entirely.

I come home today, and he's threaded an extension cord underneath the unit, plugged the coffee machine in via a hole drilled in the unit's floor and the worksurface which was NOT the plan, and left it there like a "fuck you, it fits".

I told him to put a shelf between the microwave and oven (big, built in things). The prat puts a shelf ON TOP of the microwave and the microwave on top of the oven, which us showing signs of strain already.

Then he asks for the next £5k payment. He can wait until that cabinet is down, and the microwave and oven are fixed, or he can send me the final, itemised bill and fuck off.

Dude, fuck's sake, FIRE this guy! Who knows what other shite he's doing, on purpose or out of sheer lack of proficiency? He could be seriously putting your house at risk.

I had a freeze response the other day and I'm still in the aftereffects (brain fog, tired from high anxious energy, etc). I'm seeing my doctor about a psychiatrist next week because it's been going on for months and I'm so tired of pretending everything's fine when I can't even remember what I had for dinner on Sunday night (it was pizza; obvs not memorable).

This has been going on since my dad died and it's putting a strain on my relationship with my mum because freeze responses cause me to react with either aggression or be highly scared, and my mum is a boomer that doesn't understand (she's trying). I'm so exhausted.

I'm sorry to hear that, OP. Hope the psychiatrist helps and that your mother finds more compassion and understanding.

Yesterday somebody upchucked on the steps on the floor below my apartment and maintenance still hasn't cleaned it up.

Re: Venting Corner

(Anonymous) 2026-04-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Has it been cleaned up yet?

I have to go for a medical exam tomorrow morning and I'm nervous because the office I'm scheduled at gets bad reviews and someone mentioned waiting 3 hours to be seen in a waiting room full of 30 people. I know I'm going to be anxious and irritable if I have to wait that long but I must keep that appointment. At least if I begin crying out of sheer nerves maybe it'll help me get seen by the doctor faster.

I have found that wearing a mask and headphones helps me with medical waiting rooms a lot. I have a lot of medical anxiety but the mask and headphones really help me just pretend I'm not there.

My back pain just keeps getting worse. I've now had 3 nerve blocks and one steroid injection. Pain still just keeps getting worse. I'm at the limits of what the other person's insurance will cover without a real fight. And I may be at the limits of what the doctor I've been going to can do.

I'm just at a loss. Some days it is so bad I can barely bend over. And I don't know what to do.

Have they got you into physical rehab and/or physiotherapy? I had severe back and sciatic pain related to an autoimmune condition, and the nerve blocks did little to nothing, but ongoing physio and warm water exercises slowly fixed 90% of it.
