They had an enormously popular "hetero lifemate" relationship in the 90s, and they leaned into the publicity around it by doing a lot of projects together and generally appearing to be inseparable, which became a kind of paragon of male friendship goals to their generation.

There was also an undercurrent of codependency that gave it a slow-moving train wreck quality.

IDK man, I never shipped it, but it just hit right for a lot of people back then. I didn't realize it had made a comeback, but it makes sense considering how many young people currently report loneliness and lack of connection as a big issue in their lives.
