Does anyone else struggle with overspending?

(Anonymous) 2026-04-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
My parents are extremely frugal, so I'm not even sure where I learned this behavior, but I've gotten to where I just waste so much money. It's awful. I am not in debt and technically I can afford this stuff, HOWEVER, I'm not *saving* or investing money like I should be. If I lost my job, I'd be up a creek in short order. But it's somehow so hard for me to not waste money.

Me. I'm terrible with it. I honestly just never learned good spending habits. Really only just learning now. I have barely any savings right now.

Well, given the state of the world, it's possible more folks feel the need to live it up a little. Or at least reduce misery for a little while.

I very much resemble this remark. 🥲 I know it's counter-intuitive and that spending money on things I don't need (and usually don't even want all that much) is going to make me feel worse in the long run, but it's so hard to say NO when I could instead get that quick hit of pleasure from buying something and having something new. Everything feels hopeless but at least I have a new shirt that I love, right? Same thing with eating... I'm trying to reduce my sugar consumption, eat a better diet, and lose weight, but soda is so delicious. Coffee is so delicious. And the Chili's 3 for me deal is so good, and then I'll have salsa for a few days, or I could instead get pizza which is fairly cheap and also provides leftovers...

I struggled with overspending before we became a one-income household. Then I got used to being frugal because it was necessary.

As of last Friday, we're a zero-income household. No idea how we're gonna make it. Praying we can each get 2 retail jobs or something.

I'm so sorry, that's awful. I hope you both find jobs soon.

That's awful, I'm so sorry. I hope you're both able to find something soon. It's so rough out there right now. 😭

I'm the opposite. I am a penny pincher.

I am also. It's part of why I dither when buying something I *might* like to have. What's the opposite of FOMO?

I spent a lot of my pay last year on stuff I didn't need because I was trying to fill a void left by my dad and my cat. I reeled it back by deleting shopping apps and my passwords for sites, removing any ads that encouraged FOMO spending and limiting myself to what I spent a week.

Kinda the opposite for me. Even my financial advisor is like "You know you can afford to spend some money on some nice things, right?"

Well, what are you "wasting" the money on? I don't want to generalize about you, but I sometimes shop because I'm bored and seeking novelty with new clothes or whatever. I'm a complete cheapskate when it comes to eating out and I would never spend on Doordash, but I buy clothes and jewelry really often.

It's very difficult, too, if your spending matches people that you know because you can't really know if they are also saving, have money from other sources, their folks pay their rent, etc.

I definitly feel this. I should be cooking my own lunch and cut down on junk food when I get off work and just have a couple of rice cakes to tide me over 'til I get home.

I should stop spending money on gacha when I haven't even played the last few rounds of cards I've pulled, yet.

I need to save for training camp and for the maintenance service that my new car will need down the line.
