If you claim not to read HP books (even bought second hand) or watch the movies via pirating because there's no "ethical consumption", but it is noticeable that you have them in the library of your house and there are photos of you in Universal Studios? you're a huge hypocrite.

Eh. I haven't touched an HP book in years, but I still have some from when I was like ten (which was...decades ago). One was a gift from a dearly beloved teacher so it stays.

I don't care if people have copies of books they used to love from before it turned out the author was a big piece of shit. I'm sure plenty of folks still have Gaiman or MZB books from prior to being outed as detestable. It's whatever.

Universal is more tricky since they do actively profit off of the franchise (and thus JKR gets those royalties). I personally wouldn't go but I also wouldn't blame people for going in general. Going to potterworld though does leave a bad taste in the mouth.

My main fandom discord is a nice and chill place to hang out and chat with people, it's not a busy server but we have had a few newer people join, which is great!

But one of them is claiming to have DiD.

It's assholy of me but until proven otherwise I am going to be side-eyeing them with extreme caution because every single fandom DiD person I have ever met has caused insane levels of drama because their "alters" just do whatever they want!

They also have a "fictionkin alter" so like, yeah, maybe I'll be wrong but I bet on shit hitting the fan in some way down the line when someone else in the server says/does something that goes against "who they are".

I can see why having multiple/alternate personalities have such a deep appeal for people. Lots of people struggle to reconcile the different facets of their life and personality, so thinking oh hey, maybe I'm 3 different people can be a tempting way to explain it. It helps people cope with the fact that life is complicated, thoughts and feelings are complicated, and you're not always going to feel comfortable and right in your own skin and in your own head.

I still cringe when I see people doing it without any sort of diagnosis, though.

I knew someone who was genuinely Did. We were both at the same psych hospital (I was hospitalized for a month when my depression got so bad I stopped functioning). It seemed really real to me.

Then again, I'm kind of the opposite. I tend to trust people and believe them until they prove otherwise. Has bitten me in the ass quite a few times, but it is just instinctive.

I definitely do side eye fictionkin, though.

Yeah. DID is so vanishingly rare, that we have more than the total recorded cases hanging around in discord, trying to get excused for being an asshole.

DID was "trendy" among a certain class of psychiatrists at times, but it's never been "trendy" for patients in the same way that, say, sociopathy was "trendy" when Sherlock was popular. I figure patients probably aren't lying about it. Which increases, not decreases, the chance they'll be involved in social upset, but there's no reason not to be nice until and unless that happens.

I don't blame you OP. I have dissociative PTSD/DID myself (I got my diagnosis many years ago and don't recall what my actual paperwork said, I'm more concerned with managing my mental health issues than the specific label, and so have been all the therapists I've worked with on this stuff), so this isn't coming from a place of hate. I have found that a lot of people in fandoms with mental health problems are not in a good place with managing their symptoms, and can be prone to unintentionally exaggerating or causing drama when they're triggered (plus a lot of mental health communities can be very toxic in general).

This doesn't make them bad people, but it doesn't make you obligated to put up with bad behavior either. As long as you are courteous, being wary around fandom friends with mental health conditions until you know them better is not ableist at all imo. And if someone is acting out hurtfully, you are totally justified in avoiding them, DID is not an excuse, neither is any other mental illness.

With fiction kin type stuff too, it can be a harmless coping method (it is actually common with dissociative disorders to connect strongly with fiction) or something people get much too involved in and use as justification for lashing out. People also often exaggerate about their fiction kins and use it as a way to roleplay their headcanons and bully others in fandom, I think usually it's coming from a genuine place in their emotions when people act that way, but can end up quite distorted and unhealthy. Again, mental illness is not a reason to tolerate someone's bad behavior if they're managing their symptoms poorly. Good luck in your fandom OP.

I'm usually sceptical, without saying anything, because any cases of DiD are so vanishingly rare it's difficult to even have a large sample study to work off of. Not to say that those who think they have it are deliberately making it up, but more than likely they have something else going on that they need help with.

But yeah I don't blame you for keeping your distance, sometimes you just get a feeling and keeping to yourself in that regard is the better option. Hopefully they're fine and don't do anything rash and it remains a chill place.

When it comes to canon couples, Rick and Evie are in my top five, easy. They're so cute together! I ship them forever, in all the sequels except for the one we don't speak of because Rachel Weisz wasn't in it and the actress who replaced her was... well, it wasn't her fault, but it didn't work for me at all. That's canon, though.

In fic, I want dub/non con of this alllllll day long. No romance, because that belongs to Rick/Evie. Sex pollen where Evie is horny, Rick is unavailable and Imohotep is hot = HELL YEAH. Abduction and forced consummation that Evie hates to admit that she really enjoys, EVEN BETTER. I'm also in favor of harem fantasies that involve Anck-su-namun, and Imohotep double-teaming them both like a beast.

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Monday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.

Look, I love Andor. And I'm enjoying Darth Maul. But to say they are more Star Wars than Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, or the Sequels is just silly. Have those people actually watched the OT? The OT isn't dark, isn't starring antiheroes, and always remains hopeful. Even ESB. I feel like the haters don't actually understand Star Wars.
