Besides the fact that as people said above that no one's saying HP has god-tier writing, the reverse is also not true and I'm tired of people parroting it. No, the HP books are not 'objectively bad' or the worst books ever. There are hundreds of middling and poor middle grade-to-YA stuff, especially stuff that came after HP and weakly tried to copy it, that are leagues worse than HP. The books are perfectly fine. They have issues -- I don't think I've ever spoken to anyone even in the height of HP mania who thought the SPEW plotline was good -- and they clearly got messier as they went along (I tend to think that JKR is actually a quite good middle grade writer but not very good once you get past that, which is why the early books are charming and the later ones get bogged down with a lot of worldbuilding and story issues) but they were never out and out *bad.* Bad people can make good art. Deal with it.

I agree about the middle grade writing. Yes, there were things that didn't necessarily make a whole lot of sense in the first few books, but that's kind of standard for middle grade stuff. Where you're writing to/about kids, it's pretty normal for there to be things in them that logically doesn't make any sense, but you just roll with it because it's a kids book, and kids are used to living in the adult world where frankly a lot of shit DOESN'T make sense to them. (I mean, a lot of stuff doesn't make sense to me as an adult, even.) But later on the series kind of started coming apart as the characters got older and things progressed.

Agreed, and that reminds me that what I see of something like HP - and Star Wars for that matter - is that people are really used to going to one extreme or the other without hanging out in the middle nuance area. If you feel like you have to defend it, you keep ratcheting up your description of how "good" the writing is because obviously no one with taste can object to good writing. If you feel like you have to campaign for the opposite, you have to make it out to be the worst writing ever because obviously no one with taste would be caught dead reading bad writing. It's only when fandom gets out of its need to use some sort of quality metric to either justify or decry people liking/disliking the thing that we can have real conversations about it.

Star Wars is the same. It's not masterpiece cinema, but it's also not Manos The Hands of Fate. ESB fanboys looking down on anyone who liked ROTJ is a tale as old as I am, when it has nothing to do with objective moviemaking quality but subjective enjoyment of the presentation of the story as a whole. Take quality out of the picture and now we can talk about what was fun, what's quotable, what parts you skip on a rewatch, etc.
