For what it's worth, I actually think a lot of people wouldn't mind a black Snape if him being black didn't have some unfortunate implications if they keep close to the original story. Like, Harry being unreasonably fixated on/convinced Snape is evil just because of a gut feeling, the only black teacher being the thing Neville is most afraid of, James bullying Snape "just for existing", Snape getting passed over for the job he wants to have in favour of white teachers, the whole mudblood thing... all of that makes several characters just seem (Muggle)racist.

Yeah, I understand that argument.

Snape is very much an "othered" character in the story. Coming from an abusive working-class Muggle family situation in a class-minded country, which is a double-whammy because his mother was basically a nobody, in both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. Being a half-blood Slytherin. Casting a black actor kind of underscores that in a literal way. It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

This is how I feel about it. The thing is that Harry Potter already HAS existing themes of racism in terms of the whole Muggle/mudblood thing. They already exist in Snape's background as he's written.

So when you make Snape non-white, that immediately adds some very uncomfortable implications just due to what is already in the story (that had nothing to do with real-world race in the original text).
