When the books were coming out, most of us TOLERATED her bad writing. It was a running gripe and a source of ongoing mockery in fandom.

Anyone old enough to remember hogwartstoday? It was a daily compilation of activity in the fandom on LJ. It announced fests and communities, book and movie news, linked to viral posts, etc.

Anyway, right before HBP came out, someone made a discussion post asking fans what elements of JKR's writing they most dreaded having to slog through in the new book. It was linked on hogwartstoday and got thousands of comments. Like, even ride-or-die fans were calling out her amateur style.

IDK maybe if you read the books as a kid and never read any other fiction and had no exposure to LJ, you might have established the opinion that the writing was god tier, and if you hadn't ever read any fiction since, you might still have that opinion.
