If you claim not to read HP books (even bought second hand) or watch the movies via pirating because there's no "ethical consumption", but it is noticeable that you have them in the library of your house and there are photos of you in Universal Studios? you're a huge hypocrite.

It is weird. No one is harmed by someone read the books or watching the DVDs that they already own. Nor is anyone harmed if you buy the books secondhand.

I still reread my Harry Potter books every now and then. It doesn't harm anyone.

If someone is that preachy in general, yeah, they're probably a hypocrite.

Do you make a distinction between people who visit Universal and go to HP world, and those who don't go to HP world?

I looked this up a while ago - apparently as long as HP World is part of Universal, JKR gets a cut of the money Universal makes from people who go to the parks. Regardless of whether they visit HP world while they're there. And of course she also gets money from licensed food and merch sold there.

So if you go to Universal without visiting HP world, you're still giving JKR money.

BUT I assume Universal keeps track of which attractions attract the most people, so if they notice that most visitors to Universal aren't going to HP world, they eventually might replace it with something, and then JKR won't get anymore money from them. But that will take a while obviously.

I can't imagine obsessing this hard over giving JKR money.

At this rate, we're all gonna need a wiki or at least a handy spreadsheet we can review before planning any sort of entertainment outings or purchases lest we commit a sin without even knowing it.

DA: probably the fact that having to micromanage every part of your life to maximise your "ethics points" is unsustainable, demoralising, and pretty much guaranteed to leave you a paranoid wreck over the possibility that you've sinned - sorry, "acted unethically" - by unknowingly buying something that sent money back to someone who is yet to be identified as evil.

Well, that's your problem. You're doing it for ethics points.

Try doing it because it's the right thing to do and accept that it's not going to be perfect, and you're not going to win a prize. But try being inconvenienced for a little while for the sake of your fellow human, you'll find it's not that bad.

Too many folks, especially Americans, prioritize their comfort over making sure they aren't directly contributing to someone else's harm. They're addicted to instant gratification, and don't want to do the work to make things better because it takes too long and the solution isn't perfect.

But just because it isn't *perfect* doesn't mean you don't *try.* The world doesn't change by itself.

"Trying" is avoiding what you know is contributing to cruelty in the world, making a best effort to stay aware, and accepting that there are deals and contracts behind the scenes you don't know or will forget about. Paralysing yourself to stay pure of sin is pointless.

Eh. I haven't touched an HP book in years, but I still have some from when I was like ten (which was...decades ago). One was a gift from a dearly beloved teacher so it stays.

I don't care if people have copies of books they used to love from before it turned out the author was a big piece of shit. I'm sure plenty of folks still have Gaiman or MZB books from prior to being outed as detestable. It's whatever.

Universal is more tricky since they do actively profit off of the franchise (and thus JKR gets those royalties). I personally wouldn't go but I also wouldn't blame people for going in general. Going to potterworld though does leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Expecting people to throw books away (or what...hide them?) is weird.

I deconverted at least 20 years ago but still kept my bible and some theology books on my shelf for a very long time out of sheer inertia. I honestly do believe a lot of people just forget that they're there - you see that shelf every day and as long as nothing changes, it registers as background noise to your life.

eventually, though, it catches up to you. I donated most of my books and boxed away the rest at long last, because I did reach a point of realizing that constant presence on my shelf was a reminder of the person I no longer am. I expect a lot of HP fans will do the same at some point, so I won't look down on them for not being there yet.

Yeah, every now and then I go through the sheer amount of books I have and donate them. Most my HP ones have stayed just because they are severely damaged and I feel a way about straight up chucking books into a garbage bin. It's a weird push and pull between "do I keep this book by this crappy author" and "do I throw the book into recycling". The latter will eventually win out, I'm sure.
