Medical Question

[personal profile] philstar22 2026-04-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So, I had another appointment with my spine doctors. After 3 nerve ablations and 1 steroid injection, I'm still in pain and still have difficulty bending over. They told me they can't do anything more and are referring me to an orthopedic surgeon.

Should I be scared? I don't think, given how new I am to my job, that I could take the time off I'd need for major surgery.

Honestly not sure what to think at this point.

I wouldn’t worry before you need to worry. Talk to your boss on Monday and give a heads up but I wouldn’t worry about anything until you see the surgeon. And even then I wouldn’t worry; this is all routine for them and they’ll give you a full rundown of what to expect. I know you’re still pretty new at your firm but if they won’t allow you time to recover if you need surgery and if you can’t function without it, then you’re going to have to find a new job again either way. But when you were going through the hiring process they sounded like a quality firm who would be willing to accommodate an associate who was recovering from surgery.

I agree, don't get worked up about it yet. Wait and see what the surgeon says, and you'll find out whether or not you can be flexible about when the surgery takes place and how long recovery will take. Also think about what you can possibly do in a work from home scenario. If you think your boss is a good person, then talk to them after you know more.

It would suck to lose this job, but your back pain has gotten worse and less manageable over time and you can't do your job well if you're struggling to get through your day. Prioritize your health first.

You should have work benefits and some legal protections with short or long-term disability options, right? I was offered this from HR when I was recovering from spinal surgery but I did work at home so I just worked because I wanted 100% of my salary and not the lower percentage.

I honestly don't know if it has started yet. I will check, though.
