Long shot answer: maybe he's Catholic and is wearing it in support of the pope against Trump.

You know, if he did this recently, that's actually more likely than a long shot if it's the first time he's ever worn a cross. The other subthread here is right, wearing it is about wanting to be seen as Christian. If he didn't want to be seen as Christian before but he does now, hmm, what recent developments with Christianity in the public eye might have led to his change in style?

Catholics are Christians so the answer is still yes.

Crucifix is more likely to be Catholic (though not always).
