Wearing a cross necklace

(Anonymous) 2026-04-18 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I, European atheist, saw an interview with my current celebrity crush, a male American. He was wearing a cross necklace. Does this mean he's Christian?

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

(Anonymous) 2026-04-18 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wouldn't say it's certain but I'd say it's highly likely

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

(Anonymous) 2026-04-18 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt it means he’s Muslim.

Ha!

Not absolutely necessarily, but probably, yeah.

Eh, it's possible, but you'd have to do some digging. I've seen some people wear it because it's jewelry and looks neat.

Or for sentimental reasons. I have a friend who is an atheist but who wears her grandmother's rosary because she was very close to her grandmother and it has important sentimental meaning for her.

Likely, yes. A lot of people identify as Christian, those who wear visible cross necklaces stand a good chance of being more religious than the average American. These days, that's enough to make me wary, just like seeing a dude dressed in an American flag t-shirt would.

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

Most likely.

Long shot answer: maybe he's Catholic and is wearing it in support of the pope against Trump.

You know, if he did this recently, that's actually more likely than a long shot if it's the first time he's ever worn a cross. The other subthread here is right, wearing it is about wanting to be seen as Christian. If he didn't want to be seen as Christian before but he does now, hmm, what recent developments with Christianity in the public eye might have led to his change in style?

(Anonymous) 2026-04-19 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Catholics are Christians so the answer is still yes.

Crucifix is more likely to be Catholic (though not always).

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

These days? Extremely likely.

I'm an ex-christian, I've lived through the era of it being more fashion than statement, but that era passed in about 2003. There are some lapsed-Catholics who wear one out of habit or ingrained tradition even if they don't actually do anything religious, but those are usually tiny and precious. Big solid ones? Yeah 99% likely evangelical and trying to make a statement. Extra points if it's: on a chunky chain, on a leather cord, and double bonus if it's made of nails and wire.

Men only wear crosses if they are genuinely jesus freaks, or if they're a rapper with a very known heavy influence by their Baptist grandma (in which case they may or may not claim belief, it's an unknown value).

Yeah, this is closer to my experience in the USA.

In the 90s and early 2000s? Sure, you got plenty of people wearing crosses for non-religious reasons, especially if they were a bit goth-leaning or into hip-hop.

But these days, it seems a pretty safe bet that they identify as Christian, especially if they’re anywhere near celebrity status (where you know your choices will be routinely analyzed). Maybe they’re lapsed and it’s a treasured heirloom.

Agreed. My mother wore a small gold cross necklace, but it was rarely visible as it was beneath her shirt and the cross itself was maybe 3/4 of an inch long. The bigger and more conspicuously worn the cross jewelry is, the more likely the wearer is religious, and perhaps obnoxiously so given the current atmosphere of American politics.Celebrities usually keep that part of their lives private unless they're verging on evangelical. Maybe. Celebrities are mostly empty billboard, plastering themselves with whatever draws attention and generates publicity.

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

(Anonymous) 2026-04-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, I guess I should have said that it’s a strong indication he wants to be seen as a Christian.

Whether that means actually believing in god or going to church is another story.

Unless he's goth.

I had a Jerusalem cross necklace that I don't wear anymore because extreme racists have coopted that style of cross.

I had a Saint Peter's cross necklace that I hardly ever wear it. I only had one person recognizing the meaning behind that cross.

I have mixed feelings about this, as a heathen rather than as a Christian. There's a lot of discussion in inclusive heathenry about mjolnir pendants, the valknut, and the Othala rune, because racists have adopted these symbols. Do we let them go so as not to be associated with racists, or do we hold onto them in order to push back against racist appropriation? It's a personal choice that each person has to make, but I do worry about how much ground we all tend to cede to the people we stand against. How can we defeat them if we so easily let them take what's ours?

Anyway, it's tough, and mostly I wish assholes simply didn't exist.

He's a celebrity, it's not like you have to worry about your values clashing when you start to date him. And no, being a Christian doesn't automatically or even probably mean he's homophobic or a Creationist or anything bad like that.

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

(Anonymous) 2026-04-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It likely does mean he's a Christian, but that's a massive spectrum of beliefs and behaviours.

Yes

(Anonymous) 2026-04-19 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
In some way or form, yes.

Re: Wearing a cross necklace

(Anonymous) 2026-04-19 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
For Americans, I'd say yes. Totally anecdotal, I believe there likely are more religious celebrities than the public perceives. Most celebrities don't talk about their religion, and I think it's part of trying to look appealing to as many people as possible.

I'm non-religious (agnostic), and IME people who wear cross necklaces are 99% of the time Christian. Wearing crosses as more of an aesthetic became less of a thing in the US since the mid-2000s.
