What is some fandom drama that you see circle back every few years?

The age gatekeeping in s1 made me think of it. Off the top of my head: top/bottom, "straight women writing gay men" debates, "queerbaiting" and "it should be canon or I'm quitting"

Why can't men just be friends???? *eyeroll*

Confession: I was that teenager who made that post about Xena and Gabrielle back in the day. I still love them best as friends, but I only later realized it was because I was absolutely projecting myself onto that relationship and had no idea at the time that I was asexual.

Oh gooooooood, this one. It's reared its ugly head in the Warframe fandom after Whisper in the Walls with Albrecht and Loid, to the point the writers basically had to explicitly state several times in the recent update that they are/were romantic lovers. And some people still think their relationship was platonic and/or "Master/Servant" (as Loid is a butler+assistant... long story).

What I love about this is how these people always go on and on about how shipping men who are "just friends" in canon somehow destroys the concept of male friendships. And like... you ARE aware that people in a relationship can also be friends at the same time? People act like any friendship feelings just evaporate once you take the relationship to the next level and I honestly feel sorry for them and their partners.

Generally argued by fans of different ships using very specific definitions and plenty of personal-disgust-as-a-moral-compass.

I've seen similar very specific definitions for RPF. It's like they feel uncomfortable so want to distanced themselves rather than face why they may be uncomfortable. (For the record, I'm not against anything in fandom. Fantasy is fantasy and it's all whatever you like as long as it harms none etc etc etc.)

On the other hands, I see a lot of "this isn't actually incest but their are SIBLING CODED so you're a filthy incest shipper!".

"You like that in fiction? Must like it in real life!" And it is funny how they apply it to only certain bad things. No one thinks people into Hannigram want to eat their boyfriend but I want to fuck my siblings because I think Wincestiel.

I love to mention the (nonexistent) spike of rape and incest that happened while Game of Thrones was airing. It was so popular, it HAD to be because all those people like to rape and have sex with their family, right???

Yep. Only ever about shipping related stuff. Nobody who says this actually thinks any horror or crime author is actually a serial killer in disguise. But shipping preferences?

Calling ships you don't like "sibling coded."

For some reason all of the "x coded" stuff annoys the shit out of me.

Ugh, that’s like the awful cousin of incest ship drama.

I just tell them I'm into that and it usually shuts them up.

(prime example is Sonic x Sally/Amy/Shadow/etc)

I've been in fandom for 30 years at this point, I'm too old to care about ships and if shipping is the only thing you think about, you're missing the point of the series

You're a terrible, morally suspect person if you don't like my fave, or don't ship what I ship!

Never participated on it myself, but the "liking or not villain" and "whether Villain is redeemable or not" pops up at least once in any fandom I'm in.

It normally starts with someone just expressing they like/dislike a villain character or mentioning preferring redeemable or irredeemable villains and how the media handled them. Then people taking it too far from one side or the other.

Someone thinking they're better than other fans because they like this show rather than that show, this ship rather than that ship, or they ship the ship the 'right' way. I know people find all kinds of reasons to feel superior to others, but I feel like these all have upsurges at times that slowly seep away until the next time.

"X exists in a story, therefore the author endorses X and is bad, and there's no other interpretation on the planet!"

I get sooooo sick of people trying to bring morality into fandom activities. Not against things like people organizing a fundraiser or spreading awareness, but people who think that writing a fanfic reflects your TRUE beliefs.
No I'm not creating a dark story because I want it to transpire into reality, sometimes imagined things are imaginary.

New blood gatekeeping, especially if it's from people who were targets of it before.

Slash vs femslash or het. Femslash vs het happens too, but not as often or large-scale.

It going to be canon trust.

Is def one I see make the rounds all the time, and it’s fine to ship things but predicating liking it with canon status is weird, like it was wasted time if the shippers don’t get canon. Odd as shit tbh.

Liking questionable figures (real or fictional) or media means it mirrors your ethics. Everyone falls into either "good" or "bad" and there is no in-between.
