Whenever I hear self-ship, I think about shipping characters with themselves. Ships like Master/Missy. There are just some characters who would totally be into themselves. I'm sure there is an actual name for that type of ship, but it was always self-ship in my head.

Back in the Old Days (early aughts and before) that was called 'self-cest' at least for like, Fic-writing purposes.

Though that usually involved the character meeting themselves from another timeline/dimension. I think a character that's just super-duper into themselves is still just called 'self centered'.

Oh, god, you’re bringing back memories of people arguing about whether or not self-cest was “problematic” and whether or not it should actually be considered a form of incest.

it's still called self-cest in RP circles, I wouldn't be shocked if someone said self-cest is how they still called their fic and/or art.

thank you, I couldn't remember the word right away, it was self-something but not self-ship.

That's the term I usually hear too. But much like OP, that's my first thought when I hear self-ship, that it's another term for characters being shipped with themselves. Only after a minute do I remember that it means author/character fic.

I thought that was called Reader fic. How is it different?

That's self-cest.

For the longest time I thought self-ship was the new term for selfcest. I think it’s only in the last year I’ve learned differently but my mind still goes to selfcest for a split second.
