I get irrationally irritated at K-Drama adaptations outperforming Japanese source material in terms of popularity

at no point have I ever found the adaptation to be an improvement in terms of general execution

I'm also less invested in an adaptation in a language I don't speak, ok

I get it, I tend to have a similar attitude to US adaptations of British source material.

I feel the same even if it feels kinda racist. Like, where were all these K-pop people during L'arc en Ciel's heyday? So many manga and light novels go ignored or under-sung in Japan but ooooh Korea adapts it, now it's cool? That's really weird.

L'arc en Ciel was formed 1991, 35 years ago. If you're asking where the current gen of kpop fans was back then, the answer is probably "not yet born"

I can understand that, but personally, I like the Korean adaptation of Boys Over Flowers better than the Japanese one and I thought the Taiwanese adaptation of Mars was pretty good. Also, Absolute Boyfriend has an adaptation that’s not Japanese?

Interesting, I distinctly remember Boys Over Flowers as "that one Korean adaptation that completely ruined everything" according to fans. I never got into the original manga much so I didn't check out any adaptations and can't say what they changed, maybe some people like it for the exact changes others hate.
