Seeking advice about work pay

(Anonymous) 2026-04-23 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, so a few weeks ago, I started a new job.

My first paycheck was two weeks ago. It looked right, the hours were right, the net pay looked right, although perhaps a little higher than I had anticipated - this company possibly doesn't withhold as much money as my previous job did. (Is it normal that companies might not all withhold the same percentages of money for federal and state taxes?)

Second paycheck was today. I worked fewer hours than I did for the first pay period, so I knew it would be less than the first one, and it was. BUT, it was higher than I anticipated. In fact, the amount deposited in my account was a little bit MORE than my hourly pay times the number of hours I worked. Like, not only did they not withhold anything, they paid me more than they should have??

And I don't know how to handle it. They do send out pay stubs but those won't come in until next week and now I'm going to be worrying about it. My boss won't be back until next week. Should I text her about it or just wait and see what the pay stub says? Like I DO NOT want to do anything that's going to jeopardize this job, but I also don't want to bother my boss on her days off or make trouble or whatever. I'm leaning towards waiting but I just don't know what would be best in order to keep things cool.

Contact payroll or HR about discrepancies in your pay. If you don't have HR or payroll, wait until your boss gets back and ask her what to do about it.

Ask someone at work who you would contact about this. Don't bother your boss on a day off, but do get onto this quickly. They don't have to provide a pay stub when they pay you in some states, and how much they withhold (and if this is different from company to company) also depends on where you live. But they do have to provide a breakdown of your pay at your request.
