That was bizarre.

Our modem died. After an internet outage I unplugged and replugged the modem to reset it (in case it was something with the ISP) and it started making noises it never made before (as in it was making noises!) and the status light shone a color that is not in the manual.

At least the replacement's working, touch wood.

It really was weird. The noises sounded like... dialup, but very faint. Hisses and whistles.

Now I'm deciding if I want to keep my old router with this modem (which was really just to test what was going on) or go to a somewhat faster modem with built-in router, which would help with some clutter around here...
