Giving blood

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2026-04-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)

Have you ever done it? Do you do it regularly? How does it go for you?

Some policy changes and personal changes mean that I’m finally eligible to donate after years and years. I’ve only done it once so far, but it felt like a relatively easy (for me) way of doing something good. Next time I will definitely drink more water, though. I didn’t quite follow their guidelines and had a headache afterwards.

I can't because I have chronic anemia and I also have belonephobia, so I don't want to either. My mom would donate religiously every other month until she got cancer.

Out of curiosity, where are you donating blood? My mom went to The Red Cross; they had good cookies, at least in the 90s.

I went to the Red Cross too, in a blood drive at a local church. No cookies, but a nice range of packaged snacks and drinks. I had a juice box for the first time in decades.

I'm just imagining them having one fridge with the bagged blood and another fridge with Capri Suns.

I'm banned for a few years because I had a case of acquired anemia and they want to make sure I'm very much clear of it before donating.

That being said I got the impression that B+ blood is not particularly in demand in my neck of the woods. My anemia was so bad I had to have a transfusion and they really had to dig deep in the bloodbank to find me a bag. It was like 6 months old, which made me assume no one had needed any for a while.

Sounds like you also need all the blood you’ve got, like nonny above.

This made me look up population distributions for blood type. Interesting to see that B+ is so much less common than A+.

I used to do it all the time as it was on my way to university. It always went well and I never had any issues. That said, I have a very much not-in-demand blood type, to the point where I'd get a wry "...thanks for coming out" from the staff and they didn't even bother sending reminders to my contact info, whereas my O- buddies had them blowing up their phones and hounding them to come back. So yeah, I got the message lmao. I still do it whenever I get the chance, though.

Yeah, they were quite thankful, but I couldn’t tell how much they actually wanted my blood. Seems like my platelets might be more in demand, so I’m thinking of doing that next time.

I’ve heard that in some places, they notify you if/when your blood gets used, which seems like a nice thing. But I guess it could be discouraging to know how much blood is collected just in case and goes off before it’s needed.

I just went today! I go every 8 weeks. It really doesn't affect me negatively at all; the only time I've had a problem was once when I went on the blood mobile bus, and after I finished there was no where for me to sit down because there were kids in the rest area waiting for their dad to finish his donation, so immediately after donating I had to go straight from the air-conditioner-cranked-down-way-too-cold bus to outside in the heat in July. I felt a little dizzy/weird then, but my car was close by so I just sat in there until I felt ok to drive.

I drink a lot of water all the time, I'm tall, large-framed, and fat, so I think I handle it way better than most people because there's a lot of me and I'm well-hydrated.

Very nice! I'm hoping I can make it into a routine habit like that.

I tried this "applied muscle tension" thing for the first time and I think it helped. It's a recommended technique that's supposed to keep you from getting light-headed, which I have had happen with medical blood draws in the past. Basically you cross your legs and squeeze (or just squeeze your bum) for a few seconds and release. Then you repeat it every so often throughout the blood draw, to keep your blood pressure more steady.

I will keep an eye on the inside/outside temperature change in summer. I hadn't thought of that as a factor, but I can see it making things just a little more delicate.

I do it fairly regularly. Once they actually start the draw, it takes me about 5 or 6 minutes, but answering all the questions seems like it takes forever - I feel like I have to read all the info about medications every time, even though I take no prescription medications. Not a hugely in demand blood type, usually get a message to the effect of: after making sure all the local needs were met, your blood was sent to this neighboring state.

I donate every 9 weeks. We have a bus that comes to my work, so it is easy. I don't have any issues other than they sometimes can't find a vein.

I used to donate more often when I lived closer to a donation site, but I still try to hit drives when they're nearby! My lifetime total is approaching 8 gallons, with a chunk of it being platelets as well.

For whole blood, my blood type is also fairly common, but I think of it as making sure that other B+s have what they need so that more O- is available for higher level emergencies.

Since I used to be able to donate platelets more often (I had a car, lived nearby, and worked from home back ghen, so my schedule allowed it much more frequently) and my platelets are "worth more", they still try to hound me, and I've managed it a few more times since my life changes. Not being able to move for 2-3 hours isn't great, but I get to just chill with a movie, the chairs and warm blankets are comfy, and I think the machines and the process are pretty neat.

I used to, until 1) the permanent Red Cross donation office in my city closed down. The one time I made it to a pop-up event was my last because afterwards I checked and 2) they don't allow narcoleptics to donate (I was diagnosed years after I started donating)

Not bc of contamination fears, but narcolepsy is so mysterious they don't want to take any risks that my condition gets worse with the blood loss. I think a lot (if not all) of chronic illnesses make you unsuitable to be a donor. I never had any problems but oh well, I'll keep my A+ then.

I'm banned from donating because of the kind of cancer I had, and probably can't donate organs either. But back when I was donating, I had to make sure to drink plenty of water beforehand, otherwise I got a rotten headache. Rehydration solution is even better.
