Re: Worst fandom interpretations/takes

For me, nothing will ever beat that one "All major Disney villains are queer coded" thinkpiece that included Gaston on the list.

My recent bugaboo is all those attempts to reframe a female antagonist as the victim and real protagonist because they conflate sexist writing with internal logic. It happens with a lot of teen/tween movies, and I'm specifically thinking of The Parent Trap and High School Musical. Sure, we could do with much fewer characters who reinforce ideas like women who don't want children are evil, or ambitious talented popular girls are just bitches. But that doesn't magically change that they are what they are in-text and that as long as you're aware of where the tropes come from, these are not serious realistic movies and it's more fun to view them as entertaining antagonists than wring your hands over their imagined victimhood.

That bullshit about how women who don't want kids being supposedly evil shows up in a lot of media meant for adults too

Oh I know, I just meant that saying they're victims in the story happens a lot with characters like that in stuff for kids more than in stuff for adults. Probably because those thinkpieces are mostly by young adults who like those movies and just discovered media critique, and stuff for adults is more likely to be consumed by people who are already adults and understand better that characters aren't real people.
