I haven't seen either, but obviously the key to good B&W noir is strategic lighting and high contrast. A technique that originally resulted from WW2 immigrants like Billy Wilder who took their cues from German expressionism, and I mean the contrast has to be really stark and distorted, or the effect falls flat.

Judging from the B&W car on the left... yuck.
