I don't know how to explain that one of the best fictional story lines I've ever seen was a series of wrestling matches.

Is this El Grande Americano??

This match made me so happy

It was an amazing match. Funniest part was Chad's daughter rubbing blood onto her little brother. Lol. But really, the crowds were amazing and it was just fantastic.

I never have and will never agree that Johnlock was queerbait.

Because the creators of the show kept telling people over and over and over again that it wasn’t going to happen and they weren’t going to fall in love. Shocker: they didn’t.

Actual queerbait would have been them going ‘well idk what will happen, tee hee, tune in to find out!’ not a flat ‘no’ every time it came up. The shipper-base refusing to listen to that no does not make it bait.

And no, the homophobic gay jokes of ‘lol are you guys a couple???’ were not bait, they were endemic of the culture at the time that found the idea of two men actually being together a concept worth of mockery.

Agree, on every count.

Queerbaiting requires bad-faith engagement with the shipper fanbase under the pretense that it's good-faith engagement. If it straight-up refutes the possibility of a ship 'going there' in canon, it's not queerbaiting, it's just a flat 'no'.

I've seen most of the show, but didn't really engage in fandom because it just seemed too nuts. So I hadn't actually realized that the showrunners had been adamant that Johnlock wouldn't happen, period. Maybe because "queerbaiting" was thrown around so much that I assumed they were doing the "tee hee idk let's wait and see" thing.

IMO, there's been a weird shift in fandom culture since the olden days when I first got into it. Back when dinosaurs roamed the fandom, you didn't have the same level of expectation that your non-canon ship would become canon. It didn't matter if it was your OTP to end all OTPs, you just assumed you'd never see it IRL because that's how it worked. There was a much stronger boundary between the media vs. fandom in those days.

I miss those days.

This is true. It was bad for other reasons.

I don't agree on a technicality - queerbaiting is about subtext, and the way Sherlock was promoted meant the audience at the time was encouraged to ignore what was going on at face value and look into the tiny details and subtext to deduce what was going on "underneath" to get to the truth. If the showrunners didn't want people to think of Sherlock and John as having the potential to be in a gay relationship, they needed to swamp the subtext with heterosexuality to throw off all but the most determined.

Honestly for me I genuinely wondered how many people who watched Sherlock had ever seen the Buddy Duo dynamic before, because that's basically what BBC John and Watson were. And yeah that dynamic is often very emotionally intense and they are narratively written as The Love Story, but it is never intended to be a romance and to be frank: is often the product of misogynistic male writers who don't view women as people to be worth any time or effort on beyond token love-interest one of both of the men get to 'win' as a prize at the end of the show or an episode.

So like I had an easy time reading the canon relationship as how it was intended and I wasn't surprised when it never became romantic because of course it wouldn't. That dynamic doesn't even if it would make sense for it to be a romance.

I borrowed a manga from the library. It was great and thought I would buy the series for myself.

But I noticed that the publisher was Tokyopop. Fuck those IP thieves, I am not giving them any more money ever again.

Bonus secret: I did not give a shit about their Original English Language "manga", back then, they should just have focused on translating Japanese series.

But shafting creators with Rising Stars of Manga contract traps was wrong.

I was unaware of any controversy behind the company, so I did a quick Google search.

I was pretty grossed out by the terms of their contracts, and low payment per page, so I can get not wanting to support that.

However, I saw some Reddit thread saying they went out of business in the 2010s, so presumably you wouldn't be supporting their business practices.

I'm an old hat who remembers when TokyoPop was the only way westerners could access manga. Or at the very least it was the first available source in my country.

I think Nic Cage's version of Superman could've worked. Even, perhaps especially, with the goofy suit and hair. Cage has a knack for making that sort of thing just work.

The Will Ferrell Lays commcercial airing now for the World Cup perfectly encapsulates how other countries see American soccer fans.

As an American soccer fan? It's embarrassing.
