lol "deeper meaning" lol hermeneutics

(I laugh at your phrase, not necessarily at your secret.)

[identity profile] allodole.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard so much crap about this show, so I thought it must be crap. But then I started watching it myself and it's actually pretty watchable, so uh. I feel for you, OP.

[identity profile] katerayearth.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This, OP, I'm with you. I love Dollhouse.

[identity profile] sevendayloan.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the feeling. "Wut you watch Dollhouse you hate women lol!" is kind of starting to grate. I'm sorry you feel like your f-list is judging you, anon. <3

[identity profile] theelusiven.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering that some of the best and most thoughtful metawriting on the show that I've read has come from feminists, I'm totally with you there.

Yeah, I got some of this too, although not as direct comments, thank goodness. But the "This show is all about trying to get you to like characters who rape, so if you enjoy watching it you support rape too, you horrible rape-lover" stuff made me feel like crap for a while.

I mean, I know the show was problematic, and handled some issues pretty clumsily. But I don't think enjoying thinking about some of the issues it raised and some of the characters it featured turned me into some sort of brainwashed supporter of women being abused.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
" turned me into some sort of brainwashed supporter of women being abused"

"so if you enjoy watching it you support rape too, you horrible rape-lover"

I never saw anyone say this. Can you provide some links?

I saw a lot of people saying it was problematic, and/or they couldn't watch it (like myself) because too much rape metaphor is too much.

But if someone feels 'guilty' about watching it? It's silly to blame the internets.

I personally don't like Dollhouse, but it's stupid to bash people who do. Different strokes for different folks.

[identity profile] isilrandir.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I like Dollhouse fine (although Eliza Dushku really grates) and I wish it was getting another season, because as the episodes progress it seems to get much smoother and is actually dealing with the problematic, creepy issues with the whole Doll thing. Some people just can't get over themselves, anon. Don't let them get to you!

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Dollhouse is a good show. It's no Buffy, but dammit, it's a good show.

That said, this secret is pretty darn condescending. Maybe the judging runs both ways, OP.

I'm with you, OP. Dollhouse is a good show with a great premise that got Screwed by the Network badly. I understand if someone doesn't like it for whatever reason, but it's not a bad show in any way.

[identity profile] charliequinn.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really get the Dollhouse hate. It's a fun show, I enjoy watching it.

Also, the actor who plays Victa? I really hope he gets another job soon, because he is an amazing character actor and deserves to be huge.

IMDb link here (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2222175/). He's got a moving coming out next year and his costars are Edward Norton and Robert De Niro. Can we say 'HELL YEAH!'?

THIS.

You mean "Victor?" His name is Enver Gjokaj, and I totally agree with you there.

I see your giddy John Simm and raise you giddy Christopher Eccleston.

[identity profile] softly-me.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, THANK YOU. I love Dollhouse and I'm tired of the judgment. I think it's a great show that raises a lot of moral issues and, given time, would have dealt with each and every one of them.

Most of my friends gave up during the first few episodes which admittedly were not that great. But, I'm inclined to wonder if any of them watched the first season of Buffy. That wasn't too great either and look at how it turned out.

[identity profile] cloverflynn.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I feel ya, anon. I don't necessarily think that the haters "don't get it," but that they just don't want to think about the subject matter. Dollhouse deals with a lot of complex stuff (the nature of who we are; the right and wrong of using people as actives, even if they agree to it; the grey-area morals of the people who run the Dollhouse; etc.) and not everyone is looking to watch a show that makes them uncomfortable.

Personally, that's all the stuff I like to see on TV. Hell, my favorite character on Lost is Ben, and he's the most grey-area, could-possibly-be-good-but-does-some-very-evil-things-to-achieve-it character I've ever seen.

It's definitely not Buffy, and I was pretty disappointed with the first few episodes (of both seasons, really) but I kept watching out of loyalty to Joss, and man, I'm glad I had some faith in him.

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's wrong too. What you should be annoyed about is that they're judging you due to your own PERSONAL TASTE -- which is stupid. It doesn't mean they're idiots or not looking "deeply enough" if they dislike it, but it does make them wrong to be looking down on you for enjoying something you enjoy.

I do get the frustration behind the secret, though. People who judge like that are incredibly obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-26 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I love how this comment also applies to the OP themselves. "YOUR PERSONAL TASTE SHOWS YOU'RE TOO STUPID TO GET IT!"

I totally get where you're coming from. I'm so tired of being judged for it.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. Seriously, why does liking it at all make us horrible and/or stupid people or something? I just don't get the hate.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-26 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why is it not ok for you to be judged for liking the show, but it's ok for you to judge being for not liking the show? Dollhouse really isn't that deep. The first season was mostly an excuse to dress Eliza Dushku up in various skimpy outfits; it's only really been in the second season that they've explored the moral issues of what the Dollhouse does.

[identity profile] cranraspberry.livejournal.com 2009-12-28 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do I get this feeling that you didn't watch the show?

I'm only halfway through the first season and it already has plenty of that.

[identity profile] whisperwords.livejournal.com 2009-12-27 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Dollhouse's biggest problem is Eliza Dushku. I think had they put someone else in the lead, the show would have been much stronger overall and they may have gotten more support to continue into further seasons and really address all the intriguing moral questions the show has to offer.

That said, it was handled poorly -- too much time was spent putting Eliza Dushku in skimpy little outfits and tramping her around L.A. on pointless short missions.

Saying "FU for judging me!" while simultaneously saying "I judge you FU!" is a little ridic, too.
