Why do people not understand that yaoi/slash/shounen-ai/whateverthehell, are NOT the same thing?
"lol it's all gay/boy-on-boy/whatever"
Right, 'cause hardcore man/woman porn = D/s het fantasies = fluffy chick flicks = romance novels = nonfiction het relationships = realistic fictional het relationships, it's all heterosexual relationships! If you like one you surely like the others, too!! Let's get over ourselves, they're not different at all.
Whatever.
ETA: Yeah, so it's a touchy subject for me. But I hate hate hate hate when people are all "I know yaoi isn't realistic!" and then are all "eee yaoi!" whenever there's -anything- gay regardless of whether it's actually yaoi-themed or not.
If I happen to like some guy, it's not fucking "yaoi" goddammit. It's just me liking some guy. Do not ask me who is seme or uke. Do NOT say "lol u must be uke because u look it." You know what, don't even assume there IS a seme or uke at all. HI GUYS THIS IS NOT YAOI. "Gay" works. "Homo" works. Just like "het" covers everything. Yaoi DOES NOT. I would hate so hard to live in a yaoi story. I'm sure most people would too.
What does that say? That says yaoi has themes. That means it's a sub-genre of "gay." It's like saying "sci-fi," another sub-genre in the blanket genre of "action/adventure." If you called PotC "sci-fi" would people think you're an idiot? YES. Because you'd be WRONG. How about "romance" as an overarching genre, and "historical drama" as a subgenre? Lol, does that mean "She's All That" is a historical drama? According to the original reasoning, of course it does!
aeghaetjghaetk gay people/gay literature (albeit fandom-based) have diverse relationships/themes too, dammit.
