[Amanda Palmer]
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] that-evening.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, as for the no message part, she certainly doesn't seem to be trying to carry any certain message, but not all artists have to have one particular goal in mind. Her art is there to entertain people and at times make them think (such as with "Oasis"). She's just doing what has come natural to her her whole life and many of us fans love watching/listening/enjoying it. She doesn't have to have an agenda.

Yeah, I've always wanted to like her (even before the whole Neil Gaiman thing — my friends in high school were all into the Dresden Dolls), but I can't get into her music and she just... rubs me the wrong way, I guess. :/

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Trollicious.

[identity profile] isilrandir.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one, OP. I liked the first Dresden Dolls album all right, but it seems like the more stuff she puts out, the more irritating and pretentious I find her. I think it would bug me less if everyone wasn't so starry-eyed over her, but whatever, everyone finds inspiration in different places.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
This, 100%.

[identity profile] magic-electric.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally adore Ms. Palmer, but I can totally see where you're coming from. As another commenter said, people find inspiration in different places. I respect your difference in opinion and find it commendable that you chose to look into and explore her music before rejecting her.

[identity profile] rumminov.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I still listen to her music, but I had to stop following her on twitter because she irritated me so much. Good riddance.

[identity profile] villainism.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK you. I do not get her, or the Dresden Dolls, AT ALL. I'm a big fan of theatricality! But just not their weird sexy-mime thing. Also, her voice makes me shudder (and I know I shouldn't be saying this as both a Decemberists and Joanna Newsom fan), and her lyrics seem too tailor-made to appeal to a very specific audience to be genuine.

There is nothing troll-y about this secret. It's OKAY for people not to have your taste in things, everybody.

[identity profile] muselolita.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you hush! Colin's voice has that beautiful, mellow, old-timey feel to it and it's just perfect. Don't feel bad for loving The Decemberists. ;)

I am a recent but now huge fan of Amanda's work, but I guess I can see how some people don't get it. She's very serious about her work and a large part of the music/art is quite dramatic and I don't think everyone really gets that. What I don't understand is when people say think she is trying too hard. Some performers ARE by nature very over the top, both in the art and their personality, and I find it refreshing. Art in general has been too timid lately in hopes of keeping the mainstream's attention.

I tried. I tried for a long time. I pretended to like her for the sake of friends who were obsessed with her, but it was really just tolerating her when all along I found her grating and annoying. I respect a person who finds a niche that needs to be filled and fills it, but that's all she doing. She just cashing in on an unrepresented fan base. They only like her because there's nothing else out there like her for them to like. It's like how I'll eat ramen when I have literally nothing else in the cabinet to eat.

I deeply dislike her, and I find her music and her aesthetic to be completely obnoxious and objectionable. Plus, now that she's with Gaiman it's making me dislike him, too. Ugh.

I have huge, huge hype aversion to her. I think it's the self-aggrandizing vibe that people have mentioned previously -- it just feel so center-of-attention-y.

That said, I love her music. LOVE it. She is probably my favorite artist.

I can totally appreciate whenever people say they don't like her music - none of my friends and acquaintances do. And I can see where people are coming from when they say she's obnoxious, cause occasionally she grates on me too. (Mostly her and Neil's sappy tweets to one another. But that may be the bitter single in me talking.)

But I really can't fathom how people can think she's a phony. I don't think I've ever seen an artist more genuinely and unapologetically themselves. Reading some of her earlier blogs (the more recent ones are slightly less personal, more business...also less angsty since Neil) she's so candid and honest it hurts. She has a real vision about her art - it may not be a vision you like, but it's 100% hers, nobody else's.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I like some of her music, but that's about it. I don't get the obsession. But then, people will be inspired by whatever they're inspired by. I don't think there's a need to question the rationality behind it too much.

But does it really surprise you that that sort of thing appeals to large numbers of people?

[identity profile] phonexwing.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I very much agree with this secret.
Everyone who shares my interest and taste in music loves her. I can't stand her.

[identity profile] angryscientist.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to like her, but now I've mostly tuned her and her music out from my life until I see a pic.

Girl, those eyebrows are horrid. Get somebody with some hand-eye coordination and understanding of how a face works, proportionally, to do them for you!

This is going to sound really snide and like the voice of "the rest of the internet" but here I go: I think that when people see her as obnoxious or arrogant they just don't know any/have never met/aren't an extroverted, headstrong, unique character. For her to appear less "put on" would just be bland and uninspiring.

[identity profile] vldtheimpaler.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I like the Dresden Dolls (her solo stuff not so much) but in all honesty, sometimes I just wish she would just fuck off. She just seems all over the place and obnoxiously loud. I don't know how to describe it. Kind of like the ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT FUCK YEAHH kid in school who thinks they're so much more enlightened than everyone else and above socialising with their peers. Idk idk.

Meh. I love her, but you don't have to. and at least you gave her stuff a listen and a look before writing it off \m/

I love her music very much, because modern cabaret is one of the genres I like, and in my eyes, she is very hot when she performs a concert, but I don't particularly care for her person, nor would it come to my mind to follow her twitter.
