I'm sad because I'm getting such mixed reviews of it--some of them from very biased sources, so...I really want to see it for myself.

It seems like there's this rule in fandom where fans aren't allowed to disagree. Because if you do, you're automatically stupid/racist/misogynist/14/etc. etc. etc. Fandom is such serious business.

Personally, I loved Avatar. I thought it was gorgeous beyond belief and I left the theater considering points of view I hadn't really considered anymore. The storyline wasn't the deepest (or exactly the most original, come to that), but I found it entertaining.

And for me, that's all that really matters, is that I can enjoyed it and had something to think about afterward. I go to movies to be entertained and get away from reality for a while, not to be lectured/educated. If I want a movie like that, I'll sign up for a college class.

I can understand why some don't like it, but I can't understand why they think that others should feel the same way. It's like the old chocolate ice cream versus strawberry ice cream debate. *shrugs*

Have you tried not asking the internet to validate your choice in movies? Maybe join the fandom, have some fun, and STFU to people who aren't interested and are going to tell you so?

I never saw it but I am annoyed as all fuck as the people who are acting all snobby about how it wasn't groundbreaking or amazing like they were told by others!! Okay, it was not your thing, please stop going on and on about it just to look cool and like you're edgy because you didn't like something considered a masterpiece by critics. That does not make you cooler, validate you in any way or make your life any more meaningful. It makes you look like somebody who is just trying to look cool, but you're coming off as obnoxious.

If people love the movie and consider it the greatest thing ever, good for them. It's great to love something so much. As long as they don't get full of themselves and declare that people who don't share their opinion just don't get it or aren't cultured or just don't hold the same intelligence, clearly. I haven't seen any cases of that, though. Not in comparison to people who have to say something negative about it just to look rebellious and edgy.

You're talking to a girl who admits to loving every minute of 9, so I can see where you're coming from. While I haven't seen Avatar yet, and am still feeling very nervous about whether I should, I think everyone is allowed to like what they like. My film instructor started our first classes telling us it doesn't matter what we like as long as we can explain why. So if it's because you got caught up in the experience of what was going on then I think that's good enough.

Just be ready to add "I know it has problems, but..."

Just chiming in with another "not alone!" I loved it, too. Not utterly groundbreaking in story or characters, but it was an extremely pretty movie, and long, so I say I got more than my money's worth.

Oh, and non who keeps calling everyone that liked it racist? Tell that one to the awesome black couple in front of me at the theatre who had seen it four times and were coming back for a fifth =D

I liked it, too. And I don't think there's any shame in that. Oh well. You (general 'you') don't have to hate and debase the movie and its fans to understand that there are a lot of negative themes underlying it. There's this thing called "separating reality from fiction". As a piece of fiction, it was pretty entertaining: ride flying animals, save the planet, stop the bad guys, everything is connected, rah rah go team love-and-justice!

As it relates to the real world, on the other hand, it rather sucks. I don't blame people for getting pissed about it. What I do blame people for is taking it too far. Attacking people for liking a movie is taking it too far. Having a rational discussion (see: without name-calling) about the negative points of the movie? A-OK! But telling people they're racist assholes for liking the movie doesn't get anyone anywhere.

Personally, I am of the opinion that you can like the movie as a movie and still be sensitive to the fact that it could have been a lot better if it hadn't catered to certain stereotypes (etc.).

Fuck the haters. I loved the movie and definitely did not regret paying to see it in IMAX 3D. Definitely worth it.
