What? Thomas Gibson rocked 5.09 so hard.

I may be biased since I've loved him since Dharma & Greg, but he's such a good dramatic actor.

[identity profile] asemic.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Playing a character struggling to maintain control does not mean acting like you have a bamboo stick so far up your ass it'll break if you move your neck.

And it was cute that the only way that could give him development was by going after his family. Stupid.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people actually think he's a good actor?

I watched that one episode of CM with Anton Yelchin in it and I found his acting to be OFFENSIVELY terrible. Like, distracted me to the point that I felt really bad for any of the cast unfortunate enough to have to do a scene with him. Wooden doesn't even begin to describe it.

lol and I never remember actors either but boy I remember that guy. Jesus did he stink up the place.

[identity profile] weaselistic.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hate it that whenever there is a CHARACTER who is reserved and doesn't show much emotion, people accuse the ACTOR of being bad.
Hotch is stoic, Thomas Gibson does a great job at playing stoic and still let Hotch have an emotional range. SUBTLE acting gets really underappreciated.

Seriously, it's called acting. Check out the guy's other stuff.

Unless the character in question is an actor who is bad at acting, the difference is pretty easy to see. And speaking as a kind-of-neutral third party here, I think OP is right on the money.

Example: Spock shows hardly any emotion. However, Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto are good actors, so you don't often hear complaints about their performances.

This guy just sucks. :(

ext_54696: Inconceivable! (CM in the bag)

[identity profile] chitown-gal.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I have checked out his other work. He can't act his way out of a wet paper bag in Chicago Hope. He was just as bad in CM when I still watched it. (I say "was" because I left when Gideon did and haven't seen the last three seasons, but from what I hear, TG hasn't improved as an actor.)

THIS.

ILU

I have sat through pretty much any TGibs movie imaginable (yes, IK, I have issues) and have been quite impressed by his range. And I don't impress easily.

[identity profile] elliptic-eye.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I know that that is a fallacy people commit—but I usually latch right onto the stoic character first, and I'm afraid that TG doesn't do it for me. I did think his performance was more convincing earlier on in the series, but he never stood out for me. Though Hotch may be the most repressed character, personally I think all the other, "showier" characters are rendered more subtly, short of Rossi.

But I also think Bruce Campbell is a sort of genius, so, y'know. Mileage apt to vary.

[identity profile] emmakitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Totally and completely one hundred percent seconded. TG is freakin' awesome.

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly!! Thomas Gibson GIGGLES in interviews and seems to be pretty laid back. He has to work to be Hotch. And his subtle concern for all of the team members is REAL acting.

I don't think you're an annoying troll, but I respectfully disagree with this secret.

[identity profile] roxiful.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
From the few episodes I've seen, I agree.

[identity profile] ms-erupt.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the fandom at all, but I just recently got into Criminal Minds, and I thought the exact same thing. He's starting to grow on me, but he's just so robotic and plank-faced. It's weird. I'm not sure if it's his acting, or if it's because the character is supposed to be that way. But, then I look at someone like Leonard Nimoy, for example, who is supposed to be really reserved like that, and he doesn't come off so robotic. So, who's to say.

[identity profile] weaselistic.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's only one valid way to play "a character who hides his emotions"... I'm no Star Trek expert, but I think the Vulcans are different enough from Hotch that Nimoy's Spock performance shouldn't necessarily be considered the blueprint for the character of Hotch.

Hotch does seem like he's trying too hard to hide his emotions and limit himself to his function, but that seems to be part of the character, not the actor...

Haha, don't get me wrong, I love me some Thomas Gibson, and totally bawled my eyes out through the whole Haley thing... but MAN do my mom and I crack up when he scowls. It's so two-dimensional sometimes that it just absurdly distracts from the rest of the scene.

~Example Scenario~
Emily: Maybe it's his psychosis reaching a breaking point! This might lead him to get even more violent!
Reid: I can triangulate a target zone on the map so you can figure out which families he'll try to attack!
Morgan: I'll grab the car and get to the family's house; I just hope I make it in time!
Hotch: >:(

LOL idefc how strongly I disagree, I'm glad to see a secret that's not about Reid/MGG for once

And the Trek fangirls all over this thread are bringing the lulz

[identity profile] mel-darcy.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I liked him in Dharma and Greg, but he's so.. blehhh in CM

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly you don't understand the difference between wooden and stoic.

[identity profile] elliptic-eye.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I hate neither the character nor the actor, but I do think he's the weakest of the cast after Joe Mantegna. So, no, you're not totally alone.

[identity profile] nightcamedown.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP! Every time I try to watch CM, I get the feeling somebody is playing a trick on me. I just cannot taking him/his acting seriously (which is a shame, because I think the rest of the cast is pretty good).

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well you are an annoying troll and you should feel bad about this secret.

I just watched 5x09 on YouTube, out of curiosity. That was not wooden. That was heartbreaking.
