I'm not in the fandom at all, but I just recently got into Criminal Minds, and I thought the exact same thing. He's starting to grow on me, but he's just so robotic and plank-faced. It's weird. I'm not sure if it's his acting, or if it's because the character is supposed to be that way. But, then I look at someone like Leonard Nimoy, for example, who is supposed to be really reserved like that, and he doesn't come off so robotic. So, who's to say.

I don't think there's only one valid way to play "a character who hides his emotions"... I'm no Star Trek expert, but I think the Vulcans are different enough from Hotch that Nimoy's Spock performance shouldn't necessarily be considered the blueprint for the character of Hotch.

Hotch does seem like he's trying too hard to hide his emotions and limit himself to his function, but that seems to be part of the character, not the actor...

THIS! Again!
You say it all so well...

I think LJ approves of this, as it sent me 9 notifications of it...

so, yeah, I'm down with that ;)

Dude, I've been agreeing with all your comments on this thread. So well put.

And LOL at Trek fangirls using Spock as the blueprint of all unemotional characters. Every character is different, even ones who seem built around the same basic archetype. I have loved many stoic/emotionless characters in the past--both incarnations of Spock, Data, Angel--and each performance brings its own subtleties and each character is unique. Playing Data would be an extremely different undertaking from playing Hotch, for example, and while I think both actors do an excellent job, I wouldn't dream of comparing the two.

I kind of want a cracked-out TNG/CM Xover to exist now

tl;dr IA, well put

I don't argue should be considered the blueprint or that there is one way to play any character or characters with similar characteristics. It would be rather boring to watch TV/film if that were the case! I've encountered a number of reserved characters in media, and for the most part they don't come off as wooden and robotic to me as this character does. So, I wonder if it's the character or if it's the actor. I suppose it's a matter of opinion really. In any case, Hotch is slowly starting to grow on me despite. Damn him.
