Because, um. RTD won't be writing for Eleven. RTD has left the DW building. Eleven is entirely in the hands of Moffat.

Which doesn't disqualify Eleven from having an onscreen male love interest, but it does mean RTD won't be responsible for it if it happens.

I'm also sure he hasn't really lost much "gay cred" (whatever the hell that is) either. He's still an enormously successful (very) out gay man credited in the mainstream British media for helping to normalise homosexuality on British TV (since long before his involvement in Doctor Who). His "cred" is just fine.
