As someone who's gone through it too, I'd just say, he may be resistant but try to make sure he gets the help he needs. In the long-term it really does make a difference.

but. maybe this is strange of me. i just- wish that you hadn't explicitly said that it's your brother. maybe it's my own weird conscience; maybe i'm just being stupid. it just feels like... i don't know; even under anon, i'd never want to tell such a thing of my own brother. i think that he'd want that respected, and i wouldn't be able to spread his personal traumas around like that. for some reason, that was just upsetting to me.

i don't dislike the secret itself; like i said, my heart does go out. i feel for the both of you, deeply. i just wish the wording had been more along the lines of 'someone close to me,' or something.

I wonder if anyone ever stops watching mainstream television because of a heterosexual rape in their immediate family.

Obviously, I feel terrible about what happened to your brother, and about the second-hand impact it has on you. However, as a lesbian, I just can't help but notice your link isn't "my brother was raped so I can't stand to read non-con right now," but rather "my brother was gay!raped so I can't stand to read about gay relationships right now."

Someone in my immediate family - he's straight - was sexually assaulted by a man once, and he told me that's why he finds it disgusting when I kiss my girlfriend, like that's a good reason and I should understand. But no one ever makes that reasoning about straight people, because no one ever (subconsciously or not) thinks of a straight person as an inherent representative for the entire straight community or for all heterosexual relationships.

This secret, the choice you made to link the rape explicitly to "gayness", comes across as very homophobic to me.

(And for the record, before anyone - especially anyone straight - jumps on this, yes, I have experienced rape first-hand. It was a heterosexual rape, and I can't watch rape scenes on TV without being triggered, but it would never occur to me to stop reading your average straight romance story, or to avoid straight fiction. Maybe because I'm not in the privileged position where you can conceivably do that in the first place, but whatever.)
