Well, IMHO, it depends. If you do it in moderation, then by all means, do it. Just as long as you're careful and watch out for yourself(especially if you do drugs).

One thing I've always wanted to know about people that do drugs are - where do you get it from? I'm sorry if this seems like I'm being too nosy and intrusive, but it always bugged me whenever a secret like this have come up in the past - mostly because I don't know which drugs are considered illegal(I know some are used in medical treatments, but I'm not 100% sure which ones)in certain countries, also, that if you buy drugs that are considered illegal in your country, you are committing a crime(IB4 people going "well I don't give a fuck if it's illegal, I just wanna have a smoke"). Which brings me to my final question, that if you buy your drugs illegally, where does your money go? Hardly shelters for homeless puppies or orphanages, I think.

I apologize if I come off as condescending or like I'm trying to push my morals, but I am honestly curious - this is a world I know basically nothing about, aside from television and film, and well, most media portray drug use in a negative light, so not the most objective source to base off of =/

Straight-edge anon would like to second this question. I assume most people get drugs through friends, but what's THEIR source? I always wondered.

I can tell you right now that when I used to smoke (goddamn looking for a job...having to pass pre-employment drug tests sucks) my money never ever left the town I was in. I got it from a friend, who had a friend who knew a grower.

Weed/shrooms are not some sort of syndicate. Hell, my shrooms hookup was just some awesome hippy chick who lived in a trailer and only dealt while her kids were at school-as soon as the kids came home, she went into full-time mommy mode and refused to mention drugs.

And when I used to deal...my money actually did go to charity, as it's what I tend to do with any money I don't need. i didn't deal for flashy cars or nice clothes or anything, I dealt because my friends wanted a reliable dealer, and I needed bill money. Any extra profit I made tended to get bunged off to Habitat for Humanity or the local AIDS support place.

It's pretty easy to just find somebody in a club or bar dealing around here, and I hardly live in a big town. The owners get a cut of the money too since they know it goes on.

Also, mephedrone is pretty big here (UK) and as it's not illegal yet you can buy it online and get it delivered discreetly to your door. Although... DON'T DO IT! It's nasty shit. Nobody really knows what the long-term effects are and I've had some horrible side effects from it. It's being talked about as this massive killer in the news at the moment, which is a total exaggeration of course when you read less hysteric articles which give you the solid evidence, but still I really wouldn't recommend it.

I personally am not big on buying from people I don't know because like you said, who knows where the money goes or what the hell's in it? I know a few people who grow pot so it's actually not hard to get hold of it and it's just going towards their personal wealth.

Probably more people than you think dabble in drugs but a lot tend to keep it quiet because it's so ~controversial. Most of the time, it's friends enjoying a spliff from a safe source rather than the drug lords you see in the media.

Preface: this only applies to America, and maybe only to the midwest.

So, yes, some of the money used to purchase illegal drugs goes to criminals. A lot of the local people aren't involved with anyting terribly bad, other than drug trafficking, which is only bad because it's illegal, but they are criminals. A lot of marijuana is grown locally, as well, so if that's your drug of choice, you can probably purchase it without funding anything other than the production and distribution of the drugs you want. If you're buying anything (cocaine, for example) that is grown/processed mainly out of the country, you probably will incidentally be funding some more dangerous criminal activities (up to and including human trafficking and murder). So yeah, that's bad. However, if the drugs weren't illegal in the first place, there is no reason that money used to purchase the drugs would go to criminals or fund criminal activities.

That said, I'm fairly certain that the money you use to purchase things doesn't go to shelters for homeless puppies or orphanages, either. I'm not sure how much attention you pay to what you purchase, but there's a fairly good chance that you purchase materials that are produced overseas, very likely involving child labor, unfair treatment of workers in general, etc. If you ever purchase counterfeit goods (fake designer labels) you are supporting human trafficking, child labor, and often organized crime. So, my basic point is, all illegal purchases aren't inherently "bad", and all legal purchases aren't inherently "good", and nobody spends all their money on puppy shelters.

In a US context, at least drug deals hire local. And in a lot of places, the weed is grown at least in state.

That's more then can be said for a lot of food Americans eat, and damn near everything we wear.

Marijuana has always been my drug of choice (although I have loved LSD and shrooms in the past), and for me it's never been hard to find. College, friends, pizza places, you can even buy off the street in larger urban areas. Also, if you smoke, all of a sudden you find other people who smoke and they always have their own dealers/know where to get it, so it's easier to find if you're in the community.

Personally I don't buy from anyone I don't know and I only buy if my friend has tried it already. You never know what's in it and you need to be careful. As far as knowing where my money goes - most marijuana in the US is locally grown, very little is shipped in. Most likely your giving money back to the dealer, which IMO is fine. They're growing it, putting the time and effort in, and taking the risks.

For weed: I went to a NYC public high school. I do not know where my money went in those years. I bought from this guy I knew who was putting himself through undergrad at Columbia majoring in BioChem, christ that was good. Now, my mother grows her own (you can legally have a plant for personal use) it took her like 15 tries and way more artificial stimulation than she was happy with but she creates some nice buds now.

For shrooms: My friend has found a patch by her house upstate.

The one time I've tried acid (way harder to get a hold of): My friend got it from this guy someone else told her about. I don't know where that money went, but as the above commenters said with things grown/made in the country there's less of a racket (though not none, just less) about it than with imported drugs.

And honestly I feel less guilty about where the money for my drugs go than for where the money from my cigarettes go. If you buy locally you'll probably be contributing to less exploitation than a pack of marlboros (but oh they're so addictive!).
