I think people actively hate it because, in general, the original musical means a great deal to them. A lot of us (I include myself), I believe, have felt ostracized at some point in our lives for being different, and so they relate to Erik. And they (and I) see this musical as taking something beautiful and warping it terribly.

I don't hate on anyone who thinks that LND isn't horrible, but I must admit that I hate it with a passion. I have seen it live. I wanted to hold out hope that it was good. It was beyond my wildest nightmares.

I liked the music well enough. It wasn't as good as the original, of course, but some of the songs were pretty. What I can't stand is how they shat all over the characterization. The Phantom has mellowed out to an absurd degree, Christine's a fucking saint and always right about everything, Raoul's a fanfic cliche, Mme. Giry's evil, and Meg's obsessed with having the Phantom's approval even though she was on the front lines of the angry mob that went after him. Plus, I wanted to smack that Gustave kid in the face. Oh, and what's with the Phantom threatening to kill Raoul for "taking a child that's not his"? There's more to being a father than donating some sperm, for God's sake.

I think so many people because it's, um, kinda really awful. In premise, music, and execution. It's fine that you liked it, OP, and I certainly don't look down upon people who like things that I don't. Different strokes, and all. But nothing will ever change my opinion that the entire thing is a hot mess from beginning to end.

I've been wondering when we would see more LND secrets.
I hate it because it ruins something I love that is very personal. As a big fan of the original show, I looked into LND, thinking it might be decent. After listening to the soundtrack and learning about the show, I can't watch the original without thinking about the new charactizerations and that completely destroys the original. How can I be move by All I Ask when I know that Raoul will become abusive? "It's over now, the music of the night!" won't make me cry when I know that The Phantom wasn't really finished.
The hate is active because that's the only way anything will be changed. The Phan's reactions to the early previews and soundtrack have already caused changes in the show. If enough people are vocal, producers of LND and other shows will realize that bad, fanfiction sequels are not what the fans want.

Any specific changes that you can point out? I always felt that since the cast recording was completed four months before the show even opened, that ALW pretty much felt he didn't have to change much. :/

I mean, a normal show would take constructive feedback and alter the show for the better. I kinda go the impression that that wasn't happening with LND. I mean, I don't think phan protest and/or outrage has gotten us very far.

For a lot of fans, it's not something you can just ignore. It takes its inspiration directly from the original, so it's marketing to the audience that saw the original show. It might be different if it was just another crappy musical based on the book because there are a LOT of crappy versions of the story out there. But this is directly influencing how people might view the original. It taints it, in a way. I am really not happy about it. Of course I'm never going to see it, and I'd like to pretend it doesn't exist, but it's besmirching my favorite musical just by existing.

If someone took something you love dearly, pissed on it, burned it and then sold the pissed on-burned out shell to fans saying it was better than the original, than yeah, you'd be pissed off too. You'd also be pissed of if the person who'd made the original constantly bitched out his fans (calling them delusional, and saying there were maybe 3 or 4 people who didn't want LND, when in fact there are quite a few more), and then canceled the run of the original thing you loved to make room for the pissed on burned out hull of your beloved object, then yeah. You might want to tear their eyes out. You might want to find the original "creator" (who, for that matter was just a link in a long chain of the thing-you-love mythos) and kick them in the balls.

Also if you are under the impression that "fans" can ignore anything of this magnitude that goes on in their fandom, I'm sorry, you do not understand the fan-mindset. You just don't.

I love Phantom, grew up with the songs, absolutely adore the show.

The music was terrible. The first dozen songs actually made my ears ache. I was halfway hoping it would be basically the same score, or at least a bunch of refrains from the original, but there was nearly nothing to connect it musically to Phantom.

And the plot was bloody awful, but anyone who'd read the "sequel" or even the synopsis would get that.


As a ALW fan, I was very very disappointed.

I'm more so irrationally pissed off at the character derailment. I like Raoul and I'm pissed at how he was written in this. When I read the plot and listen to the songs, all I can think of is all that bad "fix-it" fic that demonizes Raoul to get Christine back with Erik. It feels like a bad fic that someone put too much effort into.

And yes, I am one of those fans that relate to Erik. That's the second worst part for me. I always felt that Erik developed a lot as a character in the final scene and I feel this whole musical just erases that.

The second musical is simply non-canon for me.

But mostly I hate because...I HATE THE ORIGINAL. I already wanted to punch him in the cock before this travesty was even hinted at being unleashed. Now I just pray he'll die from Sepsis. Or contract some kind of incurable form of pinworm. That would teach him.

People actively hate it because they are entitled fans. The same thing happens with any sequel or adaptation, but more so if anything is changed in a significant way (heaven forbid).

Personally, I just like The Beauty Underneath. It's unintentional comedy gold, from the cheesy rock sound to the paedophilic/incestuous subtext. Total guilty pleasure.
