OP . . . Are you me? (Except for the gay male part, because I'm not much of a shipper, and so for me it tends to be a parent/sibling caring for said character rather than a romantic interest, etc., but whatever.) I mean, seriously, it just helps so much. It's like method acting, and sometimes (at least for me) it leads to some pretty kickass dreams that turn into fun-as-hell-to-write fanfic.

I mean, seriously though, you are SO not alone in this.

I think I do worse. I don't write fic, but to help myself fall asleep, I mentally compose what usually amounts to Mary Sue self-insert h/c garbage. It always works, though! :)

I do pretty much this EXACT same thing
Sometimes, if I've read a particularly good fanfic for my favourite pairing before going to bed I'll usually half act out a particularly hurt-comfort-in-bed-type-thing to fall asleep

And believe, this helps make my dreams so much more fun XD

I do this, too, except usually it's not romantic.

I've had a hurt/comfort thing since I was ... four? I don't know; I can't really recall ever NOT doing this. And it's usually not even romantic for me, and I can either be the protector or the protected, depending where my mood is on any given night.

It's good to know I'm not quite as strange as I'd thought.

Totally can relate...only for me I imagine myself with him. It's been the same character for several years. Something about comforting him in my mind makes me feel much more at ease than being comforted, I guess because it makes me feel like I'm in control of my life and am a support for him.

I highly doubt I'll ever get married (since I'm not into sex and I'm not into manly men if you can't tell) but he would definitely be my ideal boy. ;;

I have always had trouble with insomnia, so I have been making and working on stories while I lay in bed since I was a child. If you are laying in bed with someone you love, sometimes you still need to do that, but overall it's completely different.

Sounds like you've got nothing to worry about, OP. If you get involved in a relationship with someone you care for, probably you will ship you/him a whole bunch, and it won't even have to be fantasy anymore.

But even if you did fantasize, I think it's important to remember that if you still cared for him then it wouldn't be a betrayal. You'd probably want to tell him if you thought he might be bothered by it, though -- or if you are.

Oh my god, I thought I was so weird! Apparently not.
I've been doing this since I was 10 and now I have trouble going to sleep without it. I've always been into the hurt/comfort thing too.

I was going to make a secret about it, but you beat me to it. :]

I always want to do this, but whenever I try, I want to act it out physically and/or out loud, and that obviously doesn't help the getting to sleep bit.

I do EXACTLY the same thing. Except sometimes I just have my characters being miserable and sad without being cared for because I like angst.

Feeling almost the same here, because I always think about hot, sexy slash fic before sleeping.

LOL I've been doing this for years. I'm married and I still do this.

Why? Because having my drooly, snoring husband fall asleep while awkwardly rolled on top of me is not my idea of good cuddling. And it always seems to happen like that when we try.

So no. I'll keep to my side of the bed thanks.

And of course everyone is different, but I can assure you: my husband is very happy being my husband, all my quirks included, and has never found any reason to feel threatened by my 'private roleplaying'.

I do this. Usually it will be one of the charries I write- having been saved by someone they love after being in some horrible place- falling asleep. In fact, I think it's the only way I can fall asleep.

Oh anon, you're just like me! When I started living with my boyfriend, I was all concerned at first, like he would somehow figure out what I was doing and feel betrayed. And I thought I was selfish to continue fantasizing about dream guys when I had a real one right there.

But really the stories are just a way to replace the worries in my head with nice imagery and make me feel safe so I can fall asleep. There's nothing wrong or weird or threatening about them. Plus, you never have to tell anyone -- although I'm constantly surprised at how many people I DO tell, because they confess doing the same thing!
