A while ago the BBC made a programme called 'Syrian School' which followed four schools in Damascus for a year. In one school was an Iraqi refugee, whose brother was murdered. One episode dealt with him going to a Christian festival in Damascus, and trying to overcome his fear of the loud bangs made by the fireworks.

After he had done his homework, this boy liked a play a first-person shooter on the family's computer. The loud noises did not frighten him at all, and when the film crew asked him why he liked that game, he said it was because it was the same as the things he had seen in Iraq, but it was not real, and no one died because of it.

This is how I see it. I've done four tours over in Iraq and I don't equate video games with what I've seen/done. I've read all the studies saying (basically) that violence teaches violence and I'm sure that's true. But when I've had to kill, I've had to do it with dust lining my throat and in my eyes. I've had to smell a thousand things I had never smelled before. Even just carrying my gun, there's a certain state your body is in and you live in total alertness 24/7. So when I'm home and my friends are playing some game on a 72" TV while sitting on couches and eating pizza and drinking beer - I just don't equate that at all with what I've seen and done.

Video games don't make you feel fear or remorse or sorrow. War does.

Violent video games are mostly railed against because they bring violent acts and methods of dealing into every-day life, putting them alongside other quotidian concepts and making violence seem like a more mundane and acceptable course of action. This doesn't require the violence to be realistic, only that people can connect it somehow with real-life violence of any kind (fighting or hitting is obviously much more common a connection than fighting for one's life in combat). I think you are far less likely to make that connection BECAUSE you actually have an idea of what real-life combat is like, so video games don't even register on that scale, but for other people it can have the insidious effect I hopefully just explained.

I have absolutely zero problem with you playing war games. But it's an effect they can have, more on some people than others and usually over a long time period, that I wish people were more aware (or less dismissive) of.

That is so fucking wrong, those people should have taken him in for therapy. No one should be getting entertainment value out of the idea of killing people, especially not a young boy who's suffered through that in real life and is likely having difficulty coping with it.

95% of American boys are not all victims of warfare and terrorism that have an unhealthy coping method. They are mostly just appropriating assholes
