125, 142

125: Finally. Someone else gets it. *ducks cabbages*

142: Yup. Exactly. M Night is just jerking off to the wank he's causing, now. That's the only explanation I have.

Re: 125, 142

[identity profile] yukinoomoni.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit I'm first. What the flying fuck.

I don't think that Suki is the problem most people are having with the white washing of the characters. I'm pretty sure if Katara and Sokka were at least dark skinned (and preferably Indian or Inuit or a darker skinned Asian, esp since Dev would have been much better as Sokka) there wouldn't have been as many issues.

OP for 125

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't movie controversy. This is general controversy. Throughout the fandom people are being screamed at for daring to think that anyone in the Avatar universe is white, and I'm sick of it. Suki is white. Get the fuck over it.

straw man

try again

Re: OP for 125

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)

You probably think that because of her eye color.
Btw, Suki is an Asian name.

OP again

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
See? Case and point.

People just do not fucking get it.

Re: OP again

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think you need to tell us why you think Suki is white in order for us to "get it".

Re: OP again

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Her name is Suki, she's a Kyoshi warrior (and not only does she practice martial arts, but it is an integral part of her life and beliefs), and lives in a universe that is heavily borrowed from Asian/Native culture.

...But she's white? Because she has brown hair or greyish eyes (which lol asians have too)?

That's a nice video, albeit a little hard to read; it goes so fast I had to pause it a couple times to read what it said. XD

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
This video is ridiculous. White people have "squinty eyes" because the creator chose pictures of men in the sun? Asian people have naturally round eyes? Yeah, I guess that's why surgical eye widening is so common and inexpensive over there. Because their eyes are already so wide and round.

Anime characters are assumed to be Japanese for the same reason that non-white characters in books always have their race clarified - because Japanese there, like white here, is considered to be "the norm". Not because the characters "look Japanese" to them. Because if anime characters are Japanese by appearance, then every anime not set in Japan stars Japanese characters, even when this would be absolutely ridiculous. Faye Valentine, of Cowboy Bebop, "looks" like a classic anime girl. She was from Singapore, where (due to English influence in the early 20th century), women tend to look less classically Asian, and often have slightly darker skin. She was not Japanese. There are many, many, many other examples of this, including characters who were clarified to be from other countries, or who were specified to be either half or wholly of non-Asian races.

So yeah, this video is bullshit.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
+1. If you're used to seeing Japanese people, you're gonna think they look Japanese. If you're used to seeing white people, they're going to look white. That's just how our minds work.

Whomever made that video really did some things to make it fit his viewpoint better than it does in reality. Using an almost completely side profile vs. a 3/4 angled face WILL make them look differently shaped. Hurf durf. I saw several guys that were clearly asian in there that didn't have a rounded 3/4 profile. It would also be nice if they didn't have the text go by at a fast pace. I'm a fast reader and that was far too quick.

All I can say to 142 is WHAT. THE. HELL. Just because it's "DARKER AND ARTSY AND OH HO HO LOOK AT MY FANCY NEW BETTER VERSION" doesn't mean you can't learn and draw from the source material! M Night, you have officially made me loose my last scrap of hope for this. I am going to this movie with no expectations other then a few cool fight scenes. Please pardon me while I go weep in a corner.

Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh *shudders* That thought of them ruining Iroh like they did with Dumbledore when Gambon came in REALLY makes me irritated. Iroh was one of the BEST parts of the series and embodies most everything that the show is about! If you ruin Iroh, you ruin pretty much EVERYTHING EVER.

142

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
This is what bothers me most about the movie -- that they're trivializing the animated series in the wake of the big dark edgy blockbuster. That the cartoon was "too silly" because it "had" to air on Nick. That Mike and Bryan are perfectly okay with M. Night shitting all over their years-long work. (I assume? Because they're on the project?) I kind of lose more respect for them the more I hear about the movie -- somebody tell me I'm wrong.

My only consolation is that I read how the screening was so horrible. Nobody in this movie can act their way out of a paper bag, they say.

Re: 142

[identity profile] yukinoomoni.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Mike and Bryan have a gag order, btw. They're not saying anything for or against the movie because it could cause them to be removed from the project in accordance to Paramount. They're staying silent in order to avoid misinterpretation or wank.

Re: 142

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit seriously?

I don't even--

That makes sense and alleviates me a little, but still, auuughhh

I've read that some actors, when working on an adaptation, choose not to read/watch the original because they want to act the character that's in the script, and not contaminate that with the version in the source material.

IMHO it's an cting choice with a fundament. Which we may agree or not, and which may work or not, of course, but the don't do it necesairly because they are mean.

Re: 142

[identity profile] kartos.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

...but I love it when someone goes and reads/watches it to help them gain what the original creator intended.

Re: 142

(Anonymous) 2010-05-12 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
OP of 142: yesh thank you.
That's the problem: sure they're making the character their own but if it deviates from the original creator's vision...that's a bit of a bad thing.

Re: 142

[personal profile] ladysugarquill 2010-05-12 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I agreee, I think it ends up better when they read/watch the original (unless the adaptation is wildly different).
