You might not be the type of person to have really emotionally open relationships -- most people in my family aren't that into saying "I love you" or making big displays of affection, and would be embarrassed by stuff like that. It's okay to be that way with your family and friends.

Or you might be reading really schmoopy fic! That's possible too.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same thoughts, and they can be really damaging. Be careful.

101. We all think we’re kinder than we are. Your relationships are more real than anything you read in fanfiction. A lot of published fiction too, for that matter.

Fear not!

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It is inherently dangerous to compare your reality against that which is unreal by its nature.

The fact that you do not live, die, and subsist on wild swings of emotion is not a sign of an unfulfilling life. It's a sign that you do not live on an emotional roller-coaster. If we all had relationships like the ones depicted in movies, novels, and fanfiction, where emotions are ratcheted up so they can evoke reactions from an audience it would make us a world of hormone-driven, 'roid-raging, manic-depressive middle-schoolers.

Have you ever watched a soap opera? When a character on those shows gets a phone call or catches a glimpse of another character they know, they go from 0 to 60 emotionally. Instant erupting rage or plunging into the depths of sorrow or a surge of romantic bliss in a fraction of a second. It makes for addictive TV, but it is not an accurate representation of real life. (Not unless you know someone with, say, borderline personality disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder).)

If your relationships with friends, family, and others do not have all the intensity of a soap opera, a romance movie, or a moving piece of fanfiction, that's okay. It just means that you are stable and sane.

Unless they really are cold and distant, that is. Of course, you can't really judge that by comparing real life to fiction. (Fiction, by definition, is a big lie.) For that, you have to go with your gut and nothing else.

If you fear that your relationships could use some more warmth, though, you could start making more gestured toward them. Extend kind greetings, offer more compliments, and maybe do an unsolicited favor now and then to express to the people in your life just how special they are to you. Maybe they will reciprocate, or maybe not. At the least, they'll probably express some measure of gratitude for your random acts of kindness.

This person basically said everything I wanted to say in a much more eloquent way. :-)

Oh gosh, you win.

Movies have to evoke a strong response, and it's much harder to get emotional from watching something than from experiencing it. So everything gets kind of exaggerated and overly theatrical.

Realizing that did make me feel a lot better about never having had such epic relationships as the ones I've seen in fiction.

I should have read the comments before commenting, because this covered it.

You are not alone, anon. I'm always confused by the level of intimacy and openness fictional characters are portrayed as having with each other. I've never experienced anything like it, and I'm not sure I want to.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I second this.

[identity profile] ladyairy.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I tend to feel the opposite and get annoyed by fandom's superficial depictions of a lot of relationships. You're either reading really different fic for me, or maybe you're thinking more about how the characters describe the relationships than how they would actually play out in reality, if that makes sense.

[identity profile] xmarie08.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think fiction, fan or otherwise, is often about wish fulfillment. We wish we had those types of relationships, those sweeping epic love stories or close familial bonds but we they are lacking in 'real' life.

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
IDK anon, I think that's kind of like people doubting their marriages because it's not like the romance novels. There's a reason it's appealing fiction. Because it's a fantasy, something we wish we had, an idealized version of reality. And also? *hugs* it'll be ok.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Fanfic romances in no way resemble my 20 year marriage, that's for sure. I'm very happy with what I have, but it's comfortable and reliable and staid. We don't do much witty banter. We spend a lot of time talking about practical matters. We have virtually no drama. Booooooring.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Fanfiction is not a healthy rolemodel for living life.

[identity profile] thornblossom.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, anon. I've often found myself wondering the same thing. I don't have a lot of friends (out of circumstances rather than choice), but idealized fiction aside, I've realized my parents can be real puerile pricks, and lately, rather than helping me escape, fiction just drives that spike in harder, because even when it portrays families that aren't that happy and warm and perfect, chances are they're more caring and understanding than mine. Telling myself it's fiction doesn't help because while I know that some people are born into truly shitty families and not everyone has those lovely warm relationships you see on television, it still hurts because some people do.

It's gotten better, though. It's taken a lot of work, but it's gotten better. We play with the cards we're dealt, I suppose. No use crying into your cheerios every morning about it.

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm reasonably sure I can't feel love. I don't let it bother me too much. That pretty much sums up my advice.
