Fear not!

It is inherently dangerous to compare your reality against that which is unreal by its nature.

The fact that you do not live, die, and subsist on wild swings of emotion is not a sign of an unfulfilling life. It's a sign that you do not live on an emotional roller-coaster. If we all had relationships like the ones depicted in movies, novels, and fanfiction, where emotions are ratcheted up so they can evoke reactions from an audience it would make us a world of hormone-driven, 'roid-raging, manic-depressive middle-schoolers.

Have you ever watched a soap opera? When a character on those shows gets a phone call or catches a glimpse of another character they know, they go from 0 to 60 emotionally. Instant erupting rage or plunging into the depths of sorrow or a surge of romantic bliss in a fraction of a second. It makes for addictive TV, but it is not an accurate representation of real life. (Not unless you know someone with, say, borderline personality disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder).)

If your relationships with friends, family, and others do not have all the intensity of a soap opera, a romance movie, or a moving piece of fanfiction, that's okay. It just means that you are stable and sane.

Unless they really are cold and distant, that is. Of course, you can't really judge that by comparing real life to fiction. (Fiction, by definition, is a big lie.) For that, you have to go with your gut and nothing else.

If you fear that your relationships could use some more warmth, though, you could start making more gestured toward them. Extend kind greetings, offer more compliments, and maybe do an unsolicited favor now and then to express to the people in your life just how special they are to you. Maybe they will reciprocate, or maybe not. At the least, they'll probably express some measure of gratitude for your random acts of kindness.

This person basically said everything I wanted to say in a much more eloquent way. :-)

Oh gosh, you win.

Movies have to evoke a strong response, and it's much harder to get emotional from watching something than from experiencing it. So everything gets kind of exaggerated and overly theatrical.

Realizing that did make me feel a lot better about never having had such epic relationships as the ones I've seen in fiction.

I should have read the comments before commenting, because this covered it.
