We had a secret similar to this earlier this week, didn't we?

Well, I didn't (and still don't) feel terribly comfortable with the few same-sex crushes I've had simply because they feel very exploitative and appropriative to me. Since I identify as straight, and receive heterosexual privilege in most if not all areas of my life, I view having a same-sex crush as wanting to have one's cake and eat it too; that is, reaping the enjoyment of same-sex attraction while sidestepping homophobia and anti-queer prejudice. And that seems like a monstrous exercise in privilege to me. I might be more comfortable with my same-sex crushes if that weren't the case.
(O'course, I don't go around making secrets about 'em either... there are some things I do not reveal, even anonymously.)

We have one of these every other day, I think. People are obsessed with telling other people how to feel, how to identify, what to say, what not to say. It'd be funny if it weren't so creepy and annoying.

And anon, just my opinion, but I think you're being a bit hard on yourself. I do get where you're coming from, but whereas I'd say straight girls/young women kissing each other for their boyfriends' entertainment is appropriative and icky, the occasional same sex crush is nowhere close. It's organic to you, not deliberately taken from others, so I can't see how it could be appropriative. It's not like you're going around telling people how you've had a few same sex crushes, so you totally get the struggles of LGBT folks. That would be douchey behavior.

I read your pdf, and it taught me nothing of value that I didn't already know. Pretty much all it says is "Get this: Some people are at an advantage in certain situations due to being members of certain majority groups in society! You should be aware of that!" like WOAH NO WAY!!11 I don't feel that in any way invalidates my argument that you shouldn't feel guilty about being attracted to someone of the same sex just because you identify as straight. In fact, it specifically says to move away from guilt.

Would you like to discuss this further? What are you trying to say? It would nice if you could explain to me what led you to make the bold claim that I am dumb. My words were perhaps a bit harsh, and I'm sorry for that, but I really don't see how what I said makes me dumb.

I don't think that's what they're saying at all.

They're seen as heterosexual and they get all of the rights and privileges that come with that - no one's going to beat them up over it.

Indulging in same-sex attractions and actions but still being seen as heterosexual makes them feel guilty, because many homosexuals and bisexuals don't get to do that.

I dunno, I think it's up to each individual to define their sexuality. If someone says, "I'm a lesbian but I'm attracted to this man," I don't think you should be all O I JUDGE YOU IDIOT U ARE CLEARLY NOT A LESBIAN. Labels can be positive as well as negative, a way for you to define yourself; and, yeah, while our sexuality and gender can ignore this in the face of pure attraction, it can be startling and perhaps unwelcome. Maybe nobody is purely one-or-the-other-or-this-or-that, but we often define ourselves as such, and can find it odd when something to the contrary happens.
