I really disliked Kate until this season. The constant back and forth between Sawyer and Jack became the foundation of her character, which really turned me off her. It almost became a stereotype of Angsty Woman In A Drama, and it was especially annoying because I knew that the writers and EL could do a lot better than that. But I enjoyed her in season 6; I thought making finding Claire her main motivation was a smart move on the part of the writers because EL is a really great actor once she's given something to do other than make moony eyes at Jack and Sawyer.

I like Kate, too, but then I dislike (not hate) a lot of the really popular characters (Ben, Sawyer, Sayid, Locke until season 6, etc).

I hated Kate until the last episode. I just felt she wasn't a very well developed character, and her backstory really sucked. She didn't become interesting until she gave up Aaron to come find Claire. Her flash sideways story was pretty weak too. I didn't find the love triangle between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer very interesting either. I opened up to her in the last episode because she shot the Lockeness monster.

I don't hate Kate, and always found it weird how much people hated her, but her constant back-and-forth and indecisiveness between Jack and Sawyer is probably why a lot of people dislike her.

Personally, I feel like hating her for that reason alone is kinda silly, but whadda'ya know *shrugs*

I always liked Kate! I like that she had the whole crime-story background where she was on the run and holding up banks and stuff. I thought that was pretty cool.

I think people dislike her mostly because they took up a whole lot of time with the love triangle that could have been spent on more interesting plots. And while I've been in the center of something like that before and I really do empathize and think it can suck in real life, the fact that it was Josh Holloway and Matthew Fox fighting for her attentions sort of made it harder to feel her pain on that front...

I've never been a big fan, because it seemed like for about four seasons her only purpose was to create a perpetual back-and-forth on the love triangle. It felt like she was just jerking both their feelings around and that the whole love story element really distracted from what a badass female she can be.

I definitely started liking her more as Aaron's mother and I think her character was really great this season, but the perpetual relationship drama that surrounded her for so long made her really dis-likable.

But in season four and five, when she was raising Aaron and had something to DO, and a clear motivation with the thing with Claire, she suddenly became an interesting character. (And then season six came along and I totally fell in love with her).

I also just didn't like her in general. I didn't really have a reason, I just... didn't like her, and I don't feel like I really *need* a reason.

Or not, who knows.

I didn't care about the love triangle (she's entitled to be as indecisive as she want), I didn't care that she killed people (everyone did), I didn't care that she was as fucked up as everyone else on the island (duh).

I cared that she was a Mary Sue. As soon as Sawyer looks at Kate funny, Juliet gives up a 3 year committed relationship and is all YOU CAN HAVE MY MAN. I find that slightly less convincing than a smoke monster. As soon as Kate carjacks preggers Claire, Claire is all YOU CAN HAVE MY CREDIT CARD. The producers were falling all over themselves to throw plotlines her way. Really?

Most of all, I cared that EVERY TIME SHE DOES SOMETHING BATSHIT STUPID INSANE it's because she's HELPING SOMEONE.

Please Kate, you do not kill your mother's boyfriend because you're helping her. You did it because you fucking hate him.

You do not try to get Jack back from the Others even after he told you not to and fuck it up for everyone because you're helping him. You did it to feel better about yourself.

You do not follow people after they explicitly told you to leave them alone because because you're helping them. You did it because you still think you're the center of Sawyer's world (I'm a Skater and even I'm saying this).

Please Kate. Do not bring that self-serving martyr bullshit all up into my beloved show. You are self-deceptive and un-self-aware on so many levels it's mind-boggling.

People hate Jack for the same reason, because he's a Gary Stu (beats a professional con man at cards? Really?) and a fixer. But even he had the sense to do things like let Boone die in Season 1.

THAT SAID.

The finale made me like Kate. REALLY. Because for the first time she did something selfish without pretending it wasn't (REVENGE FOR JI YEON, MOTHERFUCKER); she saved Jack's ass and the day; AND she didn't get pigeonholed as a love interest. Honest Kate was kick-ass Kate! If only they had written her like that for the rest of the 6 seasons!

My problem with Kate is that so many of her actions seem illogical to me. She flip-flopped on practically everything and not just the Sawyer/Kate/Jack TRIANGLE OF DOOM. For example, when she first took Aaron it was to help her dodge prison but then suddenly she'd actually taken him fill the ~sawyer shaped hole in her heart. It's hard to like a character when you have absolutely no idea what motivates her. Yeah, she 'runs', but why does she run? I don't think even the writers knew the answer to that. The feminist in me finds her whole characterisation problematic because it seems like Darlton were justifying Kate's inconsistencies as LOL TEH WIMMIN-FOLK ARE EMOTIONAL AND ILLOGICAL LOL instead of actually making an effort to give her decent characterisation. Giving her an actual purpose outside of being a love interest in tryiing to find Claire definitely helped but was a case of too little too late, I think.

I have to say though I hate when people call her a 'whore' or whatever, I may dislike her but slut shaming is never on, imo.

Personally, I dont hate the character (don't think it's badly written or anything), I just dislike her as a person.

My dislike for Kate has two reasons: first I didn't like that she left Jack when he needed her. OK, she did it for her son, and it's perfectly understandable and the sensible thing to do, but I love Jack and I felt bad for him. His first wife left him for daring to spend his time saving people, he's being haunted by his father's ghost (both literally and metaphorically), and now she leaves him.

But mainly the constant back-and-foth with Sawyer and Jack annoys and bores me. I understand where that comes from, it makes sense (thus, not badly written), and I agree she loves both of them and is not doing it to amuse herself, but yeah, there were more interesting things happening. Plus, poor Jack ;_;

I think the reason it's hard for me to articulate my dislike of Kate is because it seems a lot of fans dislike characters as people and not as characters. It isn't her personality I dislike so much as the fact that the writers never seemed to know what to do with her outside of being the center of a love triangle and later, being a mother. She's basically the epitome of "strong female character: ur doing it wrong."

That said, I did genuinely enjoy her scenes in the finale. Shame they couldn't write her that way all the time.

I like Kate, I always have. She can hardcore get on my nerves, but almost every character can and does at some point. I have a problem with how she's written more than the girl herself - she's a strong, skilled character and has a lot more to contribute to the story than just the fucking triangle and I don't like how often the writers forgot that. (yeah wow I am so not ready to talk about Lost in past-tense yet. D:)

I just didn't like what her character became.
She had a lot of potential. I feel this way about a lot of Lost characters, though but the fact that Kate remains some sort of central character while others are tossed aside.. well that made me dislike her character even more.
She was better this last season, though.
