And I hate it when people say "Oh, I liked it, but I couldn't think of anything smart to say, so I didn't review." Come on, no one expects an essay! Leaving a nice comment takes you a few seconds but can make someone's whole day. Why wouldn't you wanna do that?

Some of us feel like idiots leaving praise comments.

Yeah, and I've noticed people are forever apologising for the quality of their review (I'm pretty sure I've even done this myself). Don't apologise! Writers are ecstatic to receive whatever you've got to give and if you've left an entire coherent sentence, well, you're way ahead of the game.

[identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they reviewed under a different name? Or are they telling you that they didn't leave a review. If so, that sucks anon. :(

[identity profile] lalachoy.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You could trust in your friend a little more.

(Anonymous) 2010-05-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Cry moar. No one's obligated to leave you a review. I'd be happy if someone just read my work at all.

Why don't you try asking them about what part of the story they liked and disliked instead of automatically not trusting them?

(Anonymous) 2010-05-28 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know no one is reading your work? They could be reading it tons, but not leaving comments.

I love reviews, no joke. But what would be the point in lying? I can't think of any reason for someone to lie and say they liked your fic. I think your sense of entitlement could dial down some.

[identity profile] usedusernames.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume they're telling the truth. There are a lot of ways to show your love for a fic without reviewing (some of the time the author may not even know about them); bookmarking, passing a link to someone, mentioning it in RL, translating the fic, like that. I'd just take their comments as a non-review form of compliment, mostly because I can't think of a reason to lie about it; if they didn't like your fic but didn't want you to know, couldn't they just not tell you? (There probably is a reason to lie and I'm just missing it, though.)

Maybe they just felt more comfortable telling you outside of the context of fanfic directly? Like, it was less personal/more social in conversation outside of the fic, or maybe if they PM'd you it seemed even more personal.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
IAWT. I just let it warm me the same way a favorable review would.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah this.

I've recently shared a link to a fanfiction I loved with a lot of people but I just realised that I had never left a review. I mean I talked about it in RL and rec'd it online. the whole package. Except for translating

OT, but

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Is your icon a reference to Malcolm in the Middle? Because I'm pretty sure I remember an episode with that kinda storyline, but I'm not sure if it WAS MitM or not.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I never lie and tell people I like fic I don't really like, so I assume most other people don't either, and if someone tells me they like my fic, I take them at their word. Try being a little more trusting. What do you think these people would get out lying to you?

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Reviewing is hard. I want to tell the writer why I liked the fic, so I sometimes keep a tab with a fic I really liked, even loved, open for weeks before I say anything. Sometimes I just give up.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Is not. No, really. Most of the time, it's laziness, not lies.

(Anonymous) 2010-05-29 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
It means they probably loved your fic but are either:

shy
tongue-tied
not keen on your personality
apathetic to your needs and desires
short on time
not looking to become friends with authors (some pressure reccer!friends to rec them)

Chill out, there's too many possibilities, you can't know. But I think it's safe to say they liked the fic.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. People are lazy fucks. It's easier to enjoy something and then move on than to leave even a one word comment.

It's shitty, but I go through periods when I just take and don't give back.

[identity profile] anivad.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've been on both sides of that; readers who've never left a review telling me they love my fics, and telling other writers I love their fics (which I genuinely do) though I've never left a review. Sometimes it's a matter of laziness; other times I really don't know what to say other than I LOVE THIS FIC on everything they write, which just seems kind of unconstructive and reptitive. I doubt that people lie about this stuff.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
This

I mean I'm not a big writer but the review part. I do that all the time. When an author has like 10 fics I liked I just don't want to leave a "I loved this so much" comment on every single one.

(Anonymous) 2010-05-29 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably because your fanfic does suck-- and so do you.

[identity profile] hyper-piggie.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't saying they love it a review in itself? I mean, their review is "I love it." And they told it to you so you know... *is confused*

[identity profile] hustle-rose010.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 04:56 am (UTC)(link)

I have trouble leaving comments on ANYTHING. So if I read a fic, and it moves me, I have no idea how to articulate that to the author. Plus, there's been times when I've written a long, planned out, not gushing but still praising, review to a fic that really meant a lot to me, only to have the author not reply. Which doesn't help my anxieties.

So yeah.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? I recently added someone whose fic I adored and when they asked me whether we could be friends I mentioned it after I had seen that it was the author. I had forgotten that I had even left a review to one of her many fics. I didn't review every single one because I had read them all in one day and if I do that I mostly just leave one comment saying that I read them all. But anyway I might as well not have left one because I had completly forgotten about it and when she asked me I told her how much I had loved her fanfiction despite thinking I had never left a review. So no it isn't a lie. Why would they lie to you? If I disliked my friend's fanfiction because it wasn't my thing or my fandom I'd just avoid the topic and no matter what I would never say I loved it when I didn't. Of course I wouldn't say: "OH MY GOD THAT SUCCKED? WHY DO YOU EVEN GET REVIEWS?" and I've never had a friend who wrote that bad fanfiction but I'd never tell them that I loved it when I didn't.
