And I hate it when people say "Oh, I liked it, but I couldn't think of anything smart to say, so I didn't review." Come on, no one expects an essay! Leaving a nice comment takes you a few seconds but can make someone's whole day. Why wouldn't you wanna do that?

Would you mind trying to explain why?

I don't mean to interrogate you or anything, and it's totally cool if it's just one of those inexplicable things like why I feel fat when I wear beige. But it just makes me curious, because I always feel really good about myself when I leave a nice review -- it's the only thing I can do in fandom that I absolutely know someone will appreciate.

Well to me it's just like if I write "Awesome fic! I loved that. Keep up the good work." it's such a standard comment. Anyone could have writtten that. I have probably written something similar way too often. A lot of people who reviewed before have probably written the same thing. I'm not telling the author what I loved I'm not giving them criticism to help them I'm just writing a comment anyone else could have written. But somehow I can't think of anything more to say.

I mostly do leave those comments but I think a lot of people feel like their comments just aren't worthy because they don't discuss the finer points of the story or quote their favourite parts and explain why they loved them.

Trust me - as as writer? That is an absolutely fine and dandy comment, and i do not think less of anyone who says this or something like it. I feel flattered and pleased that they took the time to tell me they liked what i wrote, and it always, always makes me smile.

Long story short, it's how I was raised. I had to learn in college how to give and take criticism and praise.

I completely understand how awesome it is when you get a good review, and I agree people should say something when they have something to say. However, I can't begin to explain how many things on Deviantart I've faved, and I don't always have something that isn't either more of the same or completely pointless to even go on about. Sometimes I just like something, and sometimes I have a reason but do I really need to say it? I also don't feel the need to keep putting a review say, on every chapter, even if I am reading it as its being updated chapter by chapter. Maybe I didn't like that chapter as much as the others, or just don't have anything I feel needs being said?

Yeah, and I've noticed people are forever apologising for the quality of their review (I'm pretty sure I've even done this myself). Don't apologise! Writers are ecstatic to receive whatever you've got to give and if you've left an entire coherent sentence, well, you're way ahead of the game.
